HCCArts announces its Art AfterHours Series 1 classes for 2022.
The classes take you through a clip of art history, a script of art terminology and a dip into art mediums, all in a playful explorative environment. They are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays in the classroom at the AgriCultural Museum and Arts Center, 102 City Park Road in Boerne. The cost is $35 with discounts available with membership. Limited registration available at www.hccarts.org.
These classes are offered to introduce students to decorative arts, now more often referred to as applied arts, methodologies. The term “applied” refers to the application, as well as the resulting product, of artistic design to utilitarian objects we use every day.
In comparison, works of fine art have no function other than providing aesthetic or intellectual stimulation to the viewer.
Most works of applied arts are, however, functional objects that have been made more pleasing to the eye, with a specific function in mind. Applied art embraces a huge range of items and products, from a coffee mug to a couch, to the walls and roof of an airport or school auditorium, to a crochet hook to an iPhone.
February 1 Fabulous felt with hot knife:
Take an adventure in mixed media. We will use additive and subtractive applications to transform Kunin (synthetic, perfect for green art projects) felt, paint and fiber into textural and vibrant works ready for display. Try your hand at cut work with a modern twist.
February 8 Rubber stamp carving:
Fashion your own rubber stamps and learn the principles of printmaking. The process includes carving imagery into a particular printmaking block, applying inks and transferring the image to the final project. The relief technique provides an opportunity to use positive and negative space to create a final image.
February 15 Gel plate printing:
Enjoy an evening of mono printing on gel plates. Mineral based, flexible plates can be layered with paints, inks and other mediums. The plates allow building color and texture with stencils, stamps, drawing tools and more. The class will focus on creating multiple images to craft unique prints and cards. If you want to explore mixed media, color, printing and collage concepts in a relaxed and intriguing new medium, an evening of gel printing is for you.
