After two games on the road, the Geneva football team returned home to Boerne for a non-district game Friday night against Blanco.
The Eagles played better in Boerne but didn’t turn homefield advantage into a victory after Blanco handed Geneva its third straight loss.
Blanco picked up the 26-7 victory over the Eagles and dropped Geneva to 1-3. The Eagles visit Shiner St. Paul on Friday.
Geneva coach Julius Scott said he loves the determination his team showed on Friday.
“It was a great effort,” he said. “I told the kids I was just as proud of them tonight as I was against St. Michael’s when we won. We fought, and tonight we got way better.”
The first quarter was marred by 13 penalties in the first quarter alone with 24 total in the game. In that first quarter, most of the flags were thrown against Blanco, but they still managed to score two touchdowns and take a two-score lead thanks to a Devin Newsome 16-yard run and a short pass from Cameron Anderson on a 6-yard score.
Blanco missed the extra point after the second TD but held a 13-0 lead.
The Panthers added to their advantage in the second when they scored on a 7-yard run to cap a six-play, 30-yard drive. They missed the extra point again but took a 19-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Just like the first quarter, the third period was strange but for a different reason. Geneva took the kickoff and held the ball for more than 10 minutes. The Eagles pieced together a 17-play drive before Blanco wrecked the possession with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown.
After the Pick-6, Blanco kicked off, and Geneva was able to burn up the final two minutes of the period, meaning the Panthers didn’t have one offensive play in the period but still scored and were winning 26-0 after they booted the extra point.
To Geneva’s credit, the Eagles fought hard to the end. They strung together another nice drive and this time they finished it.
Geneva QB Jacob Rosenstiel found KP FitzGerald for a 36-yard touchdown pass and the Eagles were on the board with 2:32 left in the game.
The Geneva TD erased a seven-quarter scoring drought that stretched back to last week’s game against Austin Regents.
Walker Cone kicked the extra point, and it was 26-7 in favor of the Panthers. Geneva tried an extra point, but it was recovered by the Blanco team that managed to run out the final 2:32 on the clock to secure the win and improve to 2-2.
