Chargers drop district opener at Canyon

Boerne Champion failed to give New Braunfels Canyon its first defeat of the season Friday at Cougars Stadium. 

 The Chargers took a 49-32 loss to the Cougars in the District 12-5A matchup, and Boerne Champion is now 2-2 after the loss. The Chargers will look to reclaim a winning record when they compete against Hays on Thursday, Sept. 22.  

Cougars quarterback Deuce Adams lit the Chargers up for six passing touchdowns to help New Braunfels Canyon maintain an undefeated record at 4-0. On four of those touchdowns, Adams connected with wide receiver Xayvion Noland.  

Adams hit running back Elias Gonzales and wide receiver Eli Adams for his other touchdowns.  

Running back Daniel Bastion chipped in a 6-yard rushing touchdown to give the Cougars a 49-26 lead.   

Chargers quarterback Jordan Ballin led his team with four total touchdowns - three passing and one rushing.  

Ballin carried Boerne Champion to a 20-7 first quarter lead with touchdown passes to Kannon Brooks (one touchdown) and Cole Riha (two touchdown passes) before Canyon responded in the second quarter. 

Adams hit Gavin Peters with a shovel pass at the 6:20 mark in the second quarter before connecting with Noland nearly five minutes later with a 12-yard touchdown pass to give Canyon the lead at 21-20.  

Ballin hauled in a 4-yard rushing touchdown at the 7:03 mark in the third quarter to help Boerne Champion regain the lead at 26-21. The Chargers failed to nail the two-point conversion. 

The Cougars did not take long to respond with their next possession as Adams hit Noland with a 59-yard touchdown at the 6:22 mark to regain the lead at 28-26. 

Deuce Adams connected with Eli Adams on a 14-yard touchdown pass at the 2:29 mark to increase the Cougars' lead to 35-26. 

Deuce Adams found Noland again for their last touchdown connection of the game to boost Canyon's lead to 41-26. 

The Cougars will look to keep its undefeated record intact when they compete against Smithson Valley on Sept. 22.
