After playing its first three games at home, the Boerne High football team will finally be on the road this Friday when the Greyhounds visit Gregory-Portland.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday near Corpus Christi.
Boerne was scheduled to be on the road last week but their game with Antonian was moved to BISD Stadium because of lighting issues at Apache Field and moved up a day to Thursday.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said he obviously didn’t mind another home game.
“It’s a big advantage to play at home, we have such a great crowd and support and our kids feel comfortable here. It was an advantage to play three home games, I think it has been huge for us, to be honest,” he said. “But now we have a long road trip. They’re really good, I’m glad we have an extra day off to prepare for them, that’ll help us.”
Hendrix said that moving up the game one day wasn’t that big of a deal for the team, but realized that there were others who had to change up their schedules.
“I think we learned that lesson during COVID when we had two cancellations on Wednesday of that week,” he said. “The hardest part of shifting a game is getting all the workers in place, it has nothing to do with the game itself and all our staff and administration did a great job with that.”
BHS is 3-0 with wins over Flour Bluff, Pleasanton and Antonian, while Gregory Portland is 2-1 with victories over C.C. Carroll and Victoria East and its only loss coming to Calallen.
“They’re solid and they have a really good running back, he’s the best running back we’ll see so far,” Hendrix said. “Their starting quarterback got hurt in Game 1 but the guy replacing him is good.”
Wildcats running back Dalvin Batts is averaging 125 rushing yards per game and receiver Ross Dubose is averaging more than 100 receiving yards per game.
“They want to run the ball and throw short kind of quick passes and take six or seven yards,” Hendrix said. “They use multiple formations and play with a tight end in the game that they move all over.”
In last Thursday’s win for Boerne, Jaxon Baize tossed touchdowns to Houston Hendrix, Brooks Perez and Braden Baize, while Bode Brown scored twice and Jaxon Baize ran in a score.
The game had 10 ties or lead changes before the Greyhounds wore down the Apaches in the fourth quarter and pulled away with three touchdowns in the period.
“We never panicked, there were a lot of lead changes but we just kept firing back. Nobody was out of it; we just did what we do,” the coach said. “We made big plays, that’s how you win big games. We made enough plays at the end to win.”
