Boerne Champion wrapped up non-district play Friday night with a victory over visiting Canyon Lake. The Chargers jumped out to a big lead and held on to defeat the Hawks, 44-36.

Champion ends non-district action at 2-1 and opens league play Friday at New Braunfels Canyon.

Champion coach Keith Kaiser said he wasn’t too worried about the fact that his team was up 44-13 before the Hawks scored the final three touchdowns of the game in the final period.

He said he took out most of his starters and was going to let others play and not put the starters back in.

“The final score wasn’t what we wanted, but we start district (this) week. When we were up three scores, it was time to get the ones (starters) out because we were healthy,” he said. “Not being ugly, but that’s why there are ones and twos. It was tempting to put our ones back in, but once they shut down mentally then you risk an injury of bringing them back out.”

Champion had a fast start and scored on its first play from scrimmage when Jordan Ballin hit Kannon Brooks on a 77-yard bomb and it was 7-0 just 21 seconds into the game after the Crew Pulliam kick.

The Chargers defense scored next after it came up with a safety on Canyon Lake’s first possession, bumping the score to 9-0 only a minute into the game.

Champion’s offense was rolling in the first half. Besides hitting Brooks for a score in the opening period, Ballin found Kaleb Krause and Griffin Jones for passing TDs, and it was 23-0 in the first.

After Canyon Lake tallied a touchdown early in the second and missed the extra point, Champion punched it in twice to close out the first half.

Colin Ryan had a 46-yard touchdown run in the second and then Ryan hauled in a short pass from Ballin, and the Chargers took a 37-6 lead into the break.

Both teams scored one touchdown in the third, with Champion’s touchdown coming from Chase Riha on a 45-yard pass from Ballin, who tossed five TD passes in the game to five different players.

The Chargers held a 44-13 advantage as the game went into the fourth, and by that time Kaiser was moving players in and out while the Hawks kept their starters in the game.

Canyon Lake finished strong and tallied the final three touchdowns of the contest, all in the fourth quarter. The Hawks also converted two two-point tries for 23 points in the period to make the score closer than it really was.

The Hawks tried two onside kicks in the fourth, and both times they were recovered by the Chargers.

“We executed on the onside kicks and that was good,” Kaiser said. “Canyon Lake battled, but at the end of the day, we won. If our 1s would have finished it, we would have probably scored 70.”
