Two evenly matched teams clashed at BISD Stadium on Thursday when Antonian visited Boerne and the game had more twists and turns than a good roller coaster ride.

There were 10 ties or lead changes before the Greyhounds pulled away with a strong fourth quarter to earn the 45-34 victory over the Apaches.

Boerne High improves to 3-0 and Greyhounds coach Che Hendrix said he knew Thursday’s contest would be a back-and-forth contest.

“That’s what we expected, we expected a good game and we knew they would challenge us in a different way than the first two teams would and they sure did,” he said. “It’s exciting to be in tight games late, it’s great for the coaches and players.”

The first half produced four ties or lead changes and the Greyhounds took a 17-13 lead into the break. BHS received a 69-yard TD reception from Houston Hendrix on the throw from Jaxon Baize. Joe Ballenger booted a 38-yard field goal and then Baize hit brother Braden Baize with a jump ball into the end zone. Braden beat the defender and came up with the ball to put the Hounds up 17-10 with 44 seconds on the clock.

With less than a minute left in the half, Antonian’s Topher Stubbs busted loose on several long runs and set up a 32-yard field goal for the Apaches right before intermission to make it 17-13.

The Boerne defense held Antonian to two first-half field goals and Coach Hendrix said that made a big difference in the outcome.

“Our two big plays in the half were stopping them for field goals,” he said. “Making them kick field goals ultimately ending up winning us the game.”

Antonian scored first in the second half and pulled ahead 20-17 but Boerne answered on its next drive when Brooks Perez hauled in a 39-yard TD pass from Jaxon Baize and BHS retook the lead at 24-20.

The Apaches responded with an impressive 15-play, 76-yard drive that chewed almost six minutes off the clock and the visitors were up 27-24 for the seventh tie or lead change as the game went into the fourth quarter.

Boerne High showed it can put together a sustained drive of its own after they answered with an 11-play, 68-yard possession that took 4:08 off the clock and put the Hounds ahead 31-27 for the eighth tie or lead change after Bode Brown punched it in from the 1-yard line.

Antonian responded quickly and this time covered 75 yards in just two plays after wide receiver Ricky Gonzalez got behind the Boerne secondary and scored on a 63-yard pass and catch.

The Gonzalez TD made it the ninth tie or lead change and put the Apaches ahead 34-31, but the Greyhounds went ahead for good on its next drive.

Brown tacked on his second touchdown run of the fourth quarter on a 10-yard scamper and the Hounds jumped back on top 38-34 with 2:33 left after the Ballenger PAT and that ended up being the 10th tie or lead change.

After Antonian went for it on 4th and 10 at their own 25 and didn’t convert, BHS put the game away. Jaxon Baize scored the insurance TD on a short run with 44 ticks on the clock and Boerne went up 45-34.

BHS outscored the Apaches 21-7 in the fourth quarter as their depth play a key role down the stretch.

“We’ve got a lot of guys who touch the ball and make plays,” Hendrix said. “We’ve got a lot of weapons and a lot of guys playing well.”

NOTES: Because of stadium lighting issues at Antonian, the game was moved from San Antonio to Boerne and changed from Friday to Thursday. The lights at the stadium would turn off for no apparent reason and the Apaches couldn’t get it fixed before Friday’s scheduled contest.
