Library to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month

“Books are like the wings of a bird.

Where they go, no one knows.”

Dr. Maria Alma González Pérez

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), our nation celebrates our Latino heritage and culture, proudly honoring the many and varied contributions made by Latinos to our country.

As in so many towns and cities across the nation, Boerne is now home to a growing and vibrant Latino community. The Patrick Heath Public Library salutes all those of Latino heritage. We greatly value and respect our Latino families, striving continually to enhance our Spanish language collection both in print and digital resources.

Thanks to generous funding provided to our youth department by a Community Advancement Package Grant, we have been able to enhance our children’s Spanish collection with timely, engaging books and décor. Our Spanish section will now be a bright, welcoming place for everyone.

We hope that in the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month you will discover the many joys and depths of beauty to be found in our Latino culture. How very rich and varied are the visual arts, music, dance and literature from the many nations south of our border. And weaving it all together is the Spanish language itself – as melodic as a song once song you will forever hold in your heart.

Fiesta!

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our fiesta starring children's author Maria Alma Gonzalez Perez. Enjoy bilingual tales, tunes, dancing and light refreshments generously donated by Lux Bakery. Free book to the first 20 families.

The event is scheduled beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Latino Heritage books

• “Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna” by Alda Dobbs. This riveting novel is based on the author’s true story of a young girl’s perilous journey to cross the U.S. border and lead her family to safety during the Mexican Revolution.

• “Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows” by Ryan Calejo. Infused with Hispanic folklore, this fantasy tells the tale of  middle-schooler Charlie Hernández, who learns the stories are true when, shortly after his parents disappearance, he grows horns and feathers and finds himself at the heart of a battle to save the world.

• “Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreno Played the Piano for President Lincoln” by Margarita Engle.  Melodic text and harmonize with brilliant illustrations in this biography of Venezuelan-American pianist Teresa Carreno, who performed for Abraham Lincoln.

• “Efren Divided” by Ernesto Ciscernos. While his father works two jobs, seventh-grader Efrén Nava must take care of his twin siblings, kindergartners Max and Mia, after their mother is deported to Mexico. Includes glossary of Spanish words.

• “My Shoes and I” by Rene Lainez Colato  As Mario and his Papá travel from El Salvador to the United States to be reunited with Mamá, Mario's wonderful new shoes help to distract him from the long and difficult journey.

Library gallery

“Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy” is a stunning exhibition created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library, Texas State University-San Marcos, in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities. This exhibition is made possible in part by a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In the early 1970s, famed photographer Bill Wittliff journeyed to a ranch in northern Mexico where the vaqueros still worked cattle in traditional ways. Wittliff photographed the vaqueros as worked in ways little changed from the earliest days when the first Mexican cowherders learned to work cattle on horseback.

The exhibit features digital carbon prints with bilingual narrative text that takes you back in time. This unforgettable display will be in our gallery until the end of September.

Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films.
