Hounds get first road test this year

With two home games under its belt, the Boerne High football team will have its first road test of the season when the Greyhounds head to San Antonio this week to face Antonian.

With two home games under its belt, the Boerne High football team will have its first road test of the season when the Greyhounds head to San Antonio this week to face Antonian.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Antonian on Friday.

The Greyhounds and Apaches have met over the years in non-district games and BHS coach Che Hendrix said he likes what the private school brings to the table. The coach noted that this year the Apaches are a very good passing team.

“They’ve got a really good offense and they have two really good receivers. It’ll be a great test for our secondary, that’s what I’m excited about,” he said. “It’ll be a different kind of game. We’ve seen two teams that are big and physical and want to run the ball and we’re about to see a true spread offense.

“I think they only ran it 10 times against Pleasanton so they’re going to throw it,” he said. “It’ll be a different kind of test for us but I’m excited for us.”

The Greyhounds have done well at home and beat Flour Bluff in its opener, 35-32, and then blew out Pleasanton last Friday, 41-7.

Last Friday Boerne sprinted to a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter, but Hendrix said he felt his team let up after jumping out to a big lead.

“We came out laser focused but had a little bit of a dip in the second quarter,” he said.

Pleasanton scored its first touchdown in the second period to make it 17-7 but the Baize boys – Jaxon and Braden – hit on one of their four touchdowns to bump the Boerne lead to 24-7.

However, just before the half, the Eagles had a chance to cut into the Boerne lead and had a 1st and goal at the BHS 2-yard line with 15 seconds

7 left in the half and two timeouts.

The Eagles ran two plays and went wide both times and didn’t punch it in, running out of time as the clock hit zero.

Hendrix said he felt that was a turning point in the game because instead of the score being 24-14, it stayed at 24-7.

“To our credit, that goal line stand was awesome,” he said. “That gave us a boost and we came out with a strong second half. That took the wind out of their sails.”

Boerne High made the Eagles pay when the third quarter started. On the second play from scrimmage, Jaxon Baize hit Braden Baize on an 80-yard bomb and the rout was on at 31-7.

One thing that has been evident in the two Boerne wins is the team’s depth. They rotate in a lot of players and keep people fresh.

“It matters, especially in the second half of games when it’s hot and it was hot (Friday),” Hendrix said. “We had almost every player on our team in during the first half. That’s a testament to them and being ready and being sharp and focused. I like that and I think that stuff has showed up in the last two weeks.”

Antonian is also 2-0, so one of the team’s in Friday’s game will suffer its first loss of the season. The Apaches beat Pleasanton in its opener and then defeated Blanco last Friday, 24-16.
