Even though August wasn’t quite as unbearably hot as July and the month brought a decent amount of rainfall, it still could be considered “the dog days” and certainly continued the hot and dry summer trend.
Autumn officially begins Sept. 22.
The average high temperature in Boerne in August was 96.5 degrees, or about 2.5 degrees warmer than normal. In July, the average high was 99.4.
On eight days in August, the thermometer reached 100 degrees. That means that so far in 2022, triple digits have been recorded in Boerne on 27 days, according to information from the National Weather Service in New Braunfels, the station that keeps track of Boerne’s weather.
The high for the month was 102 on Aug. 11. However, no record highs were set in August, leaving the year’s total at 21. Eighteen of those record highs occurred in May, June and July.
The triple-digit heat was recorded on Aug. 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 19. The thermometer reached at least 90 degrees on 27 days and at least 95 on 25 days. The lowest high temperature for the month was 85 on the 25th and the low temperature overall was 70 degrees on Aug. 12-14.
The average low for the month was 71.9 degrees, or about 1.5 degrees warmer than normal. The average temperature for the month was 84.2 degrees, or almost 2 degrees warmer than normal.
In September, the average high temperature sits at about 91 degrees with a normal low of about 63. Days of 100-degree heat are common here and there throughout the month with 109 degrees reached on Sept. 6, 2000.
The high so far this year is 106, reached in July.
Precipitation
As far as precipitation, 1.96 inches of rain was recorded in August, or almost an inch lower than the 2.8 average. As has been the case in several months this year, the majority of the rain fell on one day as 1.45 inches poured on the city on Aug. 23.
That one-day accumulation was part of a weather pattern that brought precipitation to Boerne on four consecutive days and totaled 1.63 inches. Rain also fell on the 12th and 15th.
August’s rainfall brings Boerne’s annual total to 9.81 inches. The mean amount through the first eight months of the year is 23.38 leading to an annual average total of 36.29.
The 9.81 inches is 42 percent of the city’s normal precipitation total two-thirds of the way through the calendar year.
From January through April, less than one inch of precipitation was recorded in Boerne each month. May produced 2.09 inches, June ended with 1.49 and July added 1.62.
The mean amount of precipitation for September is 3.9 inches.
Through the end of August, all of Kendall County is in exceptional drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. That’s the worst degree of drought possible. The majority of the Hill Country is in the same boat, even though significant rainfall elsewhere in the state has eased drought conditions.
Weather statistics have been kept in Boerne since the late 19th century.
Forecast
The National Weather Service’s long-term forecast calls for continued warmer-than-normal temperatures in Boerne and throughout Texas. Rainfall, however, is expected to be near normal amounts.
The short-term forecast for the rest of this week calls for highs in the low to mid 90s and lows in the upper 60s to about 70. Skies should be generally sunny with a slight chance of rain on Wednesday afternoon.
