SISTERDALE – In honor of the 175th founding anniversary of Sisterdale, a homecoming celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 24, starting at 11 a.m. at the School House, 2 Sisterdale-Lindendale Road.
Community organizers invite current and former neighbors and descendants of the early settlers to celebrate Sisterdale’s anniversary.
“We’ll enjoy great food and learn more about the earlier settlers and meet new ones,” information in a press release stated.
The homecoming celebration activities will include:
• Tour of the Sisterdale Schoolhouse (built in 1891).
• Historical places and events slide show.
• Starting at 12:30 p.m., food available (by donation) will include sausage, potato salad, sauerkraut, green beans and cupcakes.
• A discussion with longtime resident Bill Whitworth.
• History of Sisterdale book and commemorative mug available for purchase.
Sisterdale (originally named Zink’s Settlement) was founded in 1847 by German engineer Nicolaus Zink. It was an unplanned offshoot of the Adelsverein immigration whose purpose was to create a German society in Texas, information stated.
“Many of the Zink’s Settlement immigrants were highly educated and disillusioned by their homeland hierarchy. They became known as the ‘free thinkers,’” the information stated.
In 1852, the community decided on the name “Sisterdale” with the nearby creek forks becoming East and West Sister Creeks.
After 175 years, Sisterdale remains an unincorporated ranching and farming community. It is now supplemented by various small businesses and several outlying subdivisions.
