Boerne Champion ended the non-district portion of its schedule on Friday by sweeping Ingram on the road.
The Chargers won 25-21, 25-17, 25-22, and end non-district play at 22-5. Champion was off Tuesday and opens district play Friday at home against San Antonio Veterans Memorial.
In last Friday’s match, Emma Wegleitner finished with 12 kills, 8 digs and 3 aces, team highs in those three categories, while Ella Coleman added 7 kills, Erin Fallon dropped in 2 aces, Kelsey Rogers finished with 5 kills, Skye Conroy came up with 3 blocks and Emmy Koke and Rogers had 2 blocks each.
Fallon led the team in assists with 14 and also recorded 5 digs, Izzy Maszak tallied 3 assists, Gabbie Rossello had 7 digs, while Conroy and Erin Martin both chipped in with 4 digs.
Chargers coach Jessica Tully-Mitchell said she likes where the team is heading into district after participating in three tournaments and playing in 27 matches.
“I think we learned a lot at each of the tournaments, in Abilene you play West Texas teams and they play different than in the Hill Country. At our tournament you get to see people like SACS that came in and surprised us and at Smithson Valley we were playing 6A teams,” she said. “At Smithson Valley everybody we played except for two teams, Smithson Valley and MacArthur, were big 6A teams.”
The coach noted that one of their secrets to success is how well they get along and like each other.
“It goes with chemistry and it’s all about the team trusting each other, these girls hang out,” she said. “Every couple of years you get a group that’s bonded and this one has from the very beginning.”
