EAGLE PASS – The Boerne Champion football team was on the road Friday night with a long drive to Eagle Pass.

The Chargers were trying to stay perfect on the young season, but the Eagles rallied past their guests in the second half to hand Champion its first loss of the season.

Eagle Pass won the contest, 35-27. Champion, 1-1, is at home Friday when the it hosts Canyon Lake.

The fireworks started early for both teams as they combined for four touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

Champion quarterback Jordan Ballin ran for a touchdown in the first quarter and then threw a TD pass to Kannon Brooks and it was tied at 14-14 in the opening stanza.

The Chargers went to the air for two more scores in the second period. Brooks caught his second TD of the night, this one a 70-yard catch for a score and then Griffin Jones hauled in a TD pass and Champion pulled ahead 27-14 at the intermission.

But the Eagles just had too much firepower for the Chargers down the stretch and didn’t allow a TD in the second half, while Eagle Pass heated up and scored three more times.

Eagle Pass cut into the lead in the third quarter with a touchdown and it was 27-21 after the PAT. The Eagles scored again in the fourth quarter and pulled ahead, 28-27, with 6:57 left.

Late in the game, the hosts iced the contest with another touchdown for the 35-27 advantage and held on until the end.

After the Chargers were up 27-14, the Eagles outscored them 21-0 in the second half.
