“It was so much fun; it was a blast from the past. It was a full capacity crowd,” he said. “The football team gave us a boost and young kids from Voss and South were here and we even had a super squad (dance team) here so it made for a fun night.”

Champion started to pull away in the second half but it was the Mules who slowed down the game.

“We came out strong in the first quarter and a half and then they slowed things down tempo-wise and it took us a while to get adjusted,” Adamek said. “More teams are starting to do that, so it’s good for us to face that against a good Heights team because we may see that in the playoffs.”

Adamek said it’s a compliment to his team that others are trying to slow the game down when trailing.

“They’re just limiting possessions and hope they can hit a couple of shots and then they have a ball game,” he said. “If they try to run and play our style, they just can’t keep up with us.”

Champion won the third quarter, 15-11, and took a 50-38 lead into the final stanza. The Mules played well in the fourth and outscored the Chargers but only by a point, 15-14. Alamo Heights did hit some 3-pointers and cut the lead to 8 a few times.

“They hit three 3s to keep it at about 10 points but I was pleased with everybody,” Adamek said. “We got in a little foul trouble but it’s a rivalry game so you have to expect the unexpected.”

The Mules started fouling and sent the Chargers to the line 12 times in the final stanza where they converted 8 of 12 to keep pace. Prior to the fourth, Champion had only attempted two free throws in the game.
