Boerne Champion opened its 2022 football season by taking on a 2021 district champion last week when the Chargers hosted Laredo United South.
Now this Friday, Champion faces Eagle Pass, a team picked to win its 6A district this season.
The Chargers will hit the road and play at Eagle Pass Friday, 7 p.m.
Eagles Pass returns 37 letterman and 15 starters from a team that went two rounds in the playoffs last season.
“They feel that this is a team that could make a good run, Chargers coach Keith Kaiser said. “They have the ability to hit big plays on people, they’re going to be a lot more athletic than (Laredo United) South was.”
Both the Chargers and Eagles are 1-0 after Champion beat Laredo United South, 27-22, while Eagle Pass defeated Eagle Pass Winn in a cross-town rivalry game, 49-7.
Isaac Stanwick is the Eagles QB and last year threw for 2,212 yards and 21 TDs, while also rushing for 960 yards and 17 TDs.
“He throws the ball well and he’s got a lot of moxie about him,” Kaiser said. “(Laredo United) South didn’t stretch the field, but these guys will take their shots down the field.”
The Eagles also return running back Thomas Mares, who rushed for 1,072 yards and 18 TDs last year.
After watching film of his squad from last Friday, Kaiser said the main thing they need to work on is special teams.
“We’ve used that as a weapon since I’ve been here, but our snaps weren’t good early and we allowed a big kick return,” he said. “Those are things we haven’t done. We’ve got to get better at special teams and get them to understand that it’s a big part of our game.”
In last week’s game, Cole Riha finished with 3 TDs, one rushing and the other two receiving. Jordan Balling threw for 280 yards and 3 scores on 28 of 39 passing, while Kannon Brooks hauled in 13 passes for 123 yards, while Cameron Logan caught a touchdown pass.
Defensively, Andrew Simmons intercepted a pass, while Tony Graves led the team in tackles with 7 and assisted on 2 others, Hayden Niemeyer had 5 tackles and 5 assists, while Riha, Evan Kuhl and Jared Wingo had 4 stops each and Gage Goldberg assisted on 7 tackles and made 3 solo stops.
