Boerne High fell behind by as many as 10 points in Thursday’s season opener against Flour Bluff, but the Greyhounds rode a strong third quarter to a 35-32 victory over the Hornets at BISD Stadium.
The Hounds start the year at 1-0 and face Pleasanton at home this Friday.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said he knew that Flour Bluff, a state semifinalist last year, would be a tough test.
“It’s what we expected, it was a war, a tough physical ball game,” he said. “Both sides played their guts out, that’s a heck of a way to start a football season.”
Boerne had a heck of a start to the game. After a Braden Baize 46-yard return on the opening kickoff, the Hounds scored two plays later after Jaxon Baize hit T.J. Dement on a 54-yard pass for the 7-0 lead after the Joe Ballenger PAT.
Flour Bluff answered by scoring on its next two drives with a touchdown and a field goal and jumped on top 10-7 by early in the second quarter.
Later in the period, the Hornets added to the lead after Cameran Dickson picked off a Jaxon Baize pass and returned it 30 yards for a TD and the 17-7 advantage.
Jaxon Baize responded after the interception by leading the Greyhounds on a 59-yard scoring drive. The sophomore QB punched it in from the 2-yard line and Boerne had trimmed the Hornets’ lead to three points at the break, 17-14.
“What I was most proud of is you want a guy who’s not scared to get back into the fight and play the next play and that’s what Jaxon did tonight,” Hendrix said.
The game turned in Boerne’s favor in the second half. After the Hounds forced Flour Bluff to punt on its opening drove of the third quarter, Braden Baize had another nice return on the punt and set up BHS at the Hornets’ 24-yard line.
Five plays later, Jaxon Baize connected with Adam Hicks on a short pass for a TD and Boerne was on top, 21-17.
Braden Baize had kickoff returns of 46 and 42 yards and a punt return of 20 yards that all led to Boerne touchdowns after he gave the offense short fields.
“Our guys were blocking really well and punching big holes,” Braden said. “I was trying to set the team up and give them good field position.”
Flour Bluff had a bad snap on a punt attempt on its next drive and didn’t manage to get off a kick, setting up the Hounds at the Hornets’ 32.
Five plays later, Jaxon Baize ran it in from the 3-yard line and Boerne was up 28-17.
McCoy Bruce intercepted a pass late in the third quarter to stop a Hornets drive and then Hutson Hendrix picked up a fumble for a scoop and score and the Boerne lead ballooned to 35-17 by early in the fourth quarter after the Hounds scored 28 straight points.
Flour Bluff made it interesting at the end and tallied the final 15 points of the game with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the last four minutes, the last TD coming with 21 ticks on the clock.
From there, the Hornets tried an onside kick but it was covered by Boerne and the Hounds ran out the clock to secure the win.
