Liz Potter embraces the elements of West Texas with its brilliant sunlight, expansive skies, rocky earth and ever-present wind. She reveals a connective thread through two different but related bodies of work. Traces of history, adventures, stories of nature and gratitude for the opportunity to live her life in this environment are all evident in her art exhibition.
The color Polaroid emulsion lifts are more about the illusion of wind's invisible force on the delicate quality of a landscape, rather than the representational nature of the subject matter. The black and white self-portrait series illustrates Potter's deep interconnection with the high desert region – its harsh beauty and remoteness and a wildness that makes one want to be a part of it and participative in it.
These images were created on black and white film with a Noblex 150 medium format panoramic camera then printed on fiber-based paper in Potter's home darkroom.
Wind + Dust is part of the 28th annual FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA Photography Festival. Additionally, the exhibition is part of 10th annual Comfort Art Festival. The event features an opening reception from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. The exhibition runs through Oct. 16.
Studio Comfort is located at 716 High St. in Comfort. For additional information, call 830-995-3750 or visit www.studiocomforttx.com or www.fotoseptiembreusa.com.
Workshop
A workshop, Polaroid Emulsion Lifts: An Introduction to the Process with Liz Potter, is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, in the Hotel Giles conference room, 717 High St. in Comfort.
The cost to attend is $150 with limited registration by phone 830-995-3750 or email [email protected].
Emulsion lifts are still images frozen in motion. They are created using Polaroid film by removing the emulsion layer, transferring it to paper then manipulating it in a variety of ways.
In this workshop, students will learn how to create their own emulsion lifts using images they shoot on Polaroid film. They will learn the simple tools and supplies needed to do this at home, as well as how to achieve finished lifts through demonstrations and explanations of the process.
Students will have the opportunity to shoot some film around the historic town of Comfort and return to the workshop with their images to try the emulsion lift process themselves. Hands-on assistance will be available if needed.
Also, Hotel Giles will provide a discounted one-night stay for workshop attendees. For information or reservations, visit www.hotelgiles.com or call 830-995-3030.
