After a few weeks of practicing out in the brutal August heat and taking part in a scrimmage or two, the four area football teams in Kendall County will finally start the regular season this week.
Area football fans won’t have to travel far to watch their favorite team(s) since all four will be at home this week to start the 2022 season.
Boerne ISD fans can watch both the Greyhounds and Chargers at BISD Stadium. BHS hosts Flour Bluff on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Champion welcomes Laredo United South on Friday (7 p.m.), while Austin St. Michael’s will play at Geneva School of Boerne (7 p.m.) and Johnson City travels to Comfort to take on the Bobcats (7:30 p.m.)
Boerne vs. Flour Bluff
BHS will get a stiff test right out of the gate when the Hounds host Flour Bluff on Thursday. The Corpus Christi area school made it to the 5A DI state semifinals and won 12 games last season.
“They are one of the most consistent programs down in that area and they’re really big and physical. They’re very balanced and they don’t seem to make a lot of mistakes,” BHS coach Che Hendrix said. “Their left tackle is a Texas Tech commit, so they’re good up front. They did graduate their quarterback, but they have two tough running backs and a quick receiver on the inside. They’re very solid and well coached.”
Champion vs. Laredo United South
The Chargers host the Panthers, a team they faced last year and beat 24-12 in Laredo.
Laredo United South had a good season in 2021, posting a 6-0 mark in district and advancing three rounds before falling to Lake Travis.
“They went a few rounds in 6A and I have so much respect for them,” Chargers coach Keith Kaiser said. “It’ll be a good game.”
With only three starters back from last year, Kaiser said they’ll find out how the Chargers are progressing and where they stand on Friday.
“We’re going to find out together on Friday night, we’re going to see it all at the same time. We’ll see how these young ones react,” Kaiser said. “It’ll be a good game to prepare us for district and we have a chance to do some good things.”
Geneva vs. St. Michael’s
Geneva’s stretch of tough non-district games starts this Friday when they host Austin St. Michael’s, a 10-win team in 2021.
Eagles coach Julius Scott said Friday’s contest in Boerne against the Crusaders will be a good test for his team.
“St. Michael’s has got quality players who are extremely well coached and we will benefit from this experience,” Scott said.
Geneva’s new coach said the Eagles are ready for the new year.
“We feel great, we’ve had a great start and our kids are getting better every day,” he said. “We are playing a top-notch team that will make us better, what else could you ask for?”
Comfort High
Comfort opens the 2022 season Friday at home against Johnson City, team that went 8-3 last year and made the playoffs.
Bobcats coach Brandon Easterly said Johnson City will be good again this year.
“They play very hard and are athletic at every position,” he said. “Their quarterback can make plays with his arm and his feet and their linemen are physical.”
Easterly said the experience they bring back will help and added that they are ready for the new year.
“We’re definitely excited for the season to start. We had a great offseason, summer and now start to the season,” he said. “We felt like we played well in our scrimmages and we are looking forward to competing against a hard-nosed team like Johnson City.”
