The Boerne Independent School District announced during its August board of trustees meeting that local resident Rick Goodrich has been named chief of safety and security. Goodrich will oversee the BISD Safety and Security Department, which includes 12 school resource officers, one designated for each campus.
“I am honored to join the Boerne ISD family as chief of safety and security,” Goodrich said. “Our most important role is to keep our students and staff safe each and every day. We have school resource officers who are exceptionally skilled, as well as the best district leadership, campus administrators, teachers and staff in Texas. They all work tirelessly to ensure a safe and high-quality educational environment for students.”
Goodrich, a supervisory special agent, has 22 years of law enforcement investigative experience with the Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as 22 years of military service with the United States Air Force. Goodrich most recently served as the supervisor for the San Antonio Texas Anti-Gang Initiative, which is a multi-agency unit comprised of representatives from eight separate agencies which include the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Texas Department of Public Safety, Internal Revenue Service, Homeland Security Investigations and more.
Goodrich also managed special agents assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, DHS/HSI and the San Antonio Police Department Narcotics Unit.
He was also the commander of the DEA Houston Divisions Special Response Team and is certified as a FEMA incident commander and NIMS coordinator for the Department of Justice.
“The safety of our students, staff and visitors has always been our top priority,” BISD Superintendent Tom Price said. “When selecting a chief of safety and security, Rick stood out due to his vast expertise, skill set and knowledge. Fortunately, we had a lot of very well qualified individuals apply for this position, but we believe Rick to be the best fit to meet the needs of our student and staff safety.”
When Goodrich retired from the Air Force in December 2012, he was the commander of the 118th Security Forces Squadron. Goodrich supervised a 77-person unit that specialized in force protection, base security and anti-terrorism.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Middle Tennessee State University as well as the Air Force Command and Staff College.
Throughout his career, Goodrich responded to multiple critical incidents, including on 9/11 at the World Trade Center.
“Rick has worked extensively with local law enforcement in Boerne and Fair Oaks Ranch, as well as Kendall, Bexar and surrounding counties and state and federal agencies,” Price said. “He recently attended law enforcement training that we hosted at our campuses and has begun to assess our safety needs with our campus administration.
“We look forward to welcoming Rick to the team and have the utmost confidence in his abilities to help keep our campuses safe.”
Goodrich and his wife, Heather, have a daughter, Maddie, who attends Boerne High School and is the co-captain of the cheer squad.
“We must all work together to help ensure the safety of the BISD community,” Goodrich said. “I am excited for this wonderful opportunity. Thank you to Dr. Price and the board of trustees for their confidence and support.”
