Julius Scott era begins at Geneva School of Boerne

When the Geneva School of Boerne varsity football team opens the regular season at home against Austin St. Michael’s on Friday, Aug. 26, they’ll have a new head coach leading the program.

Dean Herbort left the Eagles after several successful seasons and is now at San Antonio Christian, while Herbort has been replaced by Julius Scott.

Scott is a familiar face around Geneva where he’s been an assistant for the last four years. The longtime coach said he’s excited about taking over the Eagles’ program and added that the transition has gone smoothly.

“Everything has come together well, we’re working hard and so far, so good, but we haven’t played anybody yet,” he said.

A look at the district

Geneva is in a district with only four teams, which means they’ll only have three district games. It also means they have seven non-district games and all of them are against tough opponents.

“I’ll bet that we have the hardest schedule in our league in TAPPS,” Scott said. “We’re attempting to see what we’ve got and how we’re going to match up against these bigger schools. We’ll see how we look after eight weeks. It may not look pretty at first, but I don’t want the guys to get down on themselves because we’re going to go against some really good teams.”

Geneva’s non-district schedule includes St. Michael’s, Randolph, Austin Regents, Blanco, Shiner St. Paul, Central Catholic and Austin Brentwood.

District opponents this year are Corpus Christi John Paul II, Schertz John Paul II and Holy Cross.

Last year, the Eagles finished 4-6 overall (3-4 in district) and didn’t make the playoffs but they dropped down a classification in TAPPS. For the next two seasons they are in District 3 – Division III where they are picked to finish second in district by Texas Football magazine.

Geneva won a state championship in this classification back in 2019 when they defeated Lubbock Christian for the title in Waco.

Scott said one thing his team won’t do this year is make excuses.

“If you put your best foot forward and don’t make excuses, you’re ahead of 98 percent of the world because the world offers excuses,” he said. “We’re trying to teach them that isn’t the way, that’s not what we’re trying to do. You have to take the gifts that God’s given you and do the best you can with those gifts.”

A look at the team

Scott said his offensive approach will be to take what the defense gives them. While Scott was an assistant at Kerrville Tivy, the team attempted 75 passes in a single game with Johnny Manziel at quarterback during the 2010 season. The 75 attempts set a state record which still stands today. Scott said the only reason they threw that much against the Mavericks was because it was what the defense was giving them.

“I don’t care about 50 percent run and 50 percent pass, we’re going to do what it takes to win,” he said. “If I can run it every down for us to win, we’re going to do it and If I have a great passer and three or four good receivers, I’m going to pass a lot because we’re trying to light up that scoreboard.

“At a small school you evaluate what you have and you have to accentuate that,” he said.

Defensively, the Eagles will line up most times in a 3-4 formation.

The Eagles return 18 players with 7 starters on offense and 6 on defense coming back. Texas Football magazine lists George Viña, Henry Jons, Landon Grimes, Luke Kaiser and Logan Fritcher as players to watch.

Scott said there are others to keep an eye on, but added, “I’ll let the rest speak for themselves when we hit the field.”
