June 18, 1936 – January 20, 2022
Mary Kay Brogan, 85, of Boerne, passed away on January 20, 2022. A recitation of the Rosary will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., and committal at the Boerne Cemetery afterward.
Mary Kay was born on June 18, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Fred and Ruth Halwe. The family moved from St. Louis to San Antonio where Mary Kay graduated from Ursuline High School in 1954 and Incarnate Word College with BSN in nursing in 1958.
She married Patrick Brogan that same year and they raised four children and enjoyed many years of PTA involvement in St. Gregory’s Parish/School. She was a volunteer and then president of JDRF after her daughter, Kerri, developed Type 1 diabetes at the age of 5. Mary Kay’s nursing career of 44 years had her working various units at Santa Rosa and Methodist Hospital as one of the first float nurses in the city. In 1973, she was one of 24 RNs hired to open the new Audie Murphy VA hospital as a head nurse of a surgical unit. She retired in 1999.
Mary Kay was a devoted mom and wife and planned every detail of a two-week yearly summer vacation in a pop-up camper traveling the United States.
She is survived by her son, Michael Brogan (wife Susan, children Matthew and Stephanie); her daughter, Patti Pena (husband Hector and child Daniel); her son, Kevin Brogan (children William, Elizabeth, and Madeline); her daughter, Kerri Bothe (husband Trevor and child Kennedy); and her brother, Brother Fred Halwe S.M.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Robert Brogan.
Instead of floral remembrances, the family suggests that donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundationto honor Mary Kay Brogan’s memory.
