First Nighters dinner returns to the Hill Country Mile

First Nighters dinner returns to the Hill Country Mile
The work of Liz Potter.

Boerne Community Theatre is happy to announce the tradition of First Nighters dinner returning in time for the opening performance of “The Lion in Winter,” the first show of the new season. BCT has partnered with Richter Tavern in this venture.

Sibling rivalry, adultery and dungeons, “The Lion in Winter,” by James Goldman and directed by Keisha McFerrin, is a modern-day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action, the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family which is locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom.

The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II.

Let out for only the holidays, the play centers on the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry's paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, "Every family has its ups and downs," and this royal family is no exception.

If you have not yet enjoyed an evening at Richter Tavern, look forward to a 1920s industrial-themed bar and restaurant. Richter's Garage was opened in 1918 by an enterprising Arno Richter when the automobile began replacing horse and buggy. Here, he worked on cars that included the popular Ford Model T.

A feature of the restaurant is the ornate, solid cherry wooden bar that survived a turn-of-the-century fire at the Metropolitan Saloon. The bar survived and served many drinking establishments into the 1970s on its journey to its restoration and installation at Richter Tavern.

Through the vision of Guy and Joi Sanders, the building has been reinvented at 153 Main St. and along with the shops included in the footprint, one can enjoy Richter Cork and Keg, pairing wine and light bites, and Richter Bakhaus featuring coffee concoctions, baked goods and cinnamon buns.

To accommodate Boerne Community Theatre First Nighters, there is a limited menu of four items. The $30 meal includes meal and tip. Alcoholic drinks can be ordered separately.

BCT is selling dinner tickets through its website, allowing patrons the opportunity to buy dinner and theatre tickets at the same time. Reservations can be made now when ordering your tickets for the Sept. 2 performance.

“The Lion in Winter” runs through Sept. 18 and is located at 907 E Blanco Road in Boerne. For general information, refer to www.boernetheatre.org or call 830-249-9166 for reservations.
