Novelist Sarah Bird is one of my favorite authors.
Back in the eighties (1980s, not 1880s), my oldest friend told me about a book I needed to read. It was a book set in Austin, very funny and written by an Austinite. The book was “The Boyfriend School” by Sarah Bird. I read the book and loved it.
Since that book, I have read every novel by Sarah Bird. After finishing “The Yokota Officer’s Club,” I sighed and was sad to set it down, pointed to the book and announced, “that’s my favorite Sarah Bird book.”
“The Yokota Officer’s Club” pulled me into unfamiliar territory of military families and living overseas during wartime. It is a fascinating novel based in part on the author’s life.
I had the same reactions to “How Perfect is That?” and “Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen.” Each book Sarah Bird writes immediately becomes my favorite. I feel a sense a loss after reading each of these books because I know it will be a good while before the author will have another one out in the world.
Currently, I’m reading the author’s latest book, “Last Dance on the Starlight Pier.” I’m savoring each word. This novel has everything for me – mystery, drama and another world I know nothing about. It’s set in Galveston during the 1930s and covers the history of the era, including the mob influence in Galveston at that time and the dance marathon craze.
Sarah Bird will be one of our featured authors at the Boerne Book & Arts Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1. Author James Wade will be in conversation with Sarah about “Last Dance on the Starlight Pier.” This discussion will take place at 12:45 pm at Main Plaza.
Please drop by and listen to this fabulous program and stick around to have Sarah sign your book. We will be selling the author’s books at our on-site bookstore at the festival. Proceeds go back to the library.
Other programs we have lined up for the day include a panel discussion on “Women and the Space Program,” a performance for kids by beloved poet and author Carmen Tafolla, a discussion on “Hill Country Rivers and Fishing” and much more!
