The Boerne Champion girls soccer team opened district play on the road Tuesday at New Braunfels Canyon and came away with a 3-1 win.

Champion starts district at 1-0 and improves to 4-0-2. They were scheduled to play Antonian in a non-district match Friday but that has been cancelled and won’t be made up, according to coach Kara Walters, who said she’ll use the opportunity to go scout a future district opponent.

The Lady Chargers will take Friday off and host Dripping Springs Tuesday.

Champion outshot Canyon in Tuesday’s match, 18-4, and had 13 shots on goal compared to 2 for the Cougars.

Vivian Garza broke a 0-0 tie in the 30th minute and then Mack Arendall made it 2-0 in favor of the Chargers five minutes later on the assist from Kallyn Zaner.

Champion’s shutout held until late in the second half when NB Canyon sliced the lead in half on a goal with 14 minutes left in the match to make it 2-1.

Arendall pushed the Chargers advantage back to two goals with her second goal of the night in the final minute on the assist from Skyleigh Arnold.

Audrey Riordan was in goal all 80 minutes for the Chargers.
