The Boerne Champion volleyball team kicked off its 2022 season Monday night at home with a sweep of Fredericksburg.
Champion beat the Battlin’ Billies at Charger Gym, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22. They start the year at 1-0 and play in the Abilene Bev Ball Tournament this weekend.
Chargers coach Jessica Tully-Mitchell said they turned in a solid performance on Monday.
“It’s always good to start with a win,” she said. “It’s a sweep and Fred is a wellcoached team and it’s good to get a win against them.”
Champion took the first two games comfortably but the sweep was in doubt in Game 3 as the Battlin’ Billies raced out to a big lead before Tully-Mitchell called a timeout to slow down the Fred momentum.
It worked and the Chargers rallied and tied Fred, forcing the Battlin’ Billies coach to call a timeout, but it wasn’t enough as Champion had the momentum by then and closed out the final set to earn the sweep.
Tully-Mitchell said they have to learn to adjust as the match progresses and that was the issue in the third set.
“Making some of those adjustments is something we’re going to have to work on all season, we can’t think that what we did in set 1 is going to work in the others,” she said. “Sometimes we have to change what we’re doing and anticipate what the other team is going to do.”
Emma Wegleitner led the team in kills with 12 and Kelsey Rogers had 6 kills, Izzy Maszak tallied 15 assists and Ryann Michalec added 10 assists.
Maszak served up 2 aces, Gabriela Rossello and Wegleitner came up with 8 digs each, Sadie Hoyt and Ella Coleman both recorded 5 digs, while Rogers had 4 blocks and Coleman closed out the match with a block.
