Let’s have a drum roll … This is your final Friday “Coffee with Keith” column.
No, it or me are not going away – which is a good thing. The Friday Star as a whole is going away.
In fact, today is the final edition of your Friday Boerne Star.
Next week, we transition into our much-publicized Wednesday- weekend format – something we’ve been planning for and working hard on for weeks. So don’t fret if you don’t get a newspaper next Tuesday. It should be in your email inbox the next day on Wednesday. And, you should get your first “Sunday” paper on Saturday both in print and online to read and enjoy over the weekend.
Please make sure our office has a correct email address to ensure you won’t skip a beat. If you’re not sure, check our online steps on our website, www.boernestar. com, or call our office manager, Joanie Reed, at 830-249-2441 or email her at joanie.reed@boernestar. com. … The Star has been publishing on Tuesdays and Fridays for more than 26 years. It was announced on March 5, 1996, that “Today’s edition of The Boerne Star marks the inaugural edition of a twice weekly newspaper for Boerne.”
“A twice-weekly paper is more often than a weekly, but less than a daily,” then-Publisher Leon Aldridge said in that edition of The Star. “All of our market research indicates that the growing Boerne market is ready for at least two editions a week.”
Indeed. That article continued by stating every edition – Tuesdays and Fridays – will feature the latest in news and advertising, giving the community a fresher, more up-to-date newspaper than the once a week Boerne Star.
That still holds true today – and even more so. We’re just shifting gears by one day.
It’s a move we believe will best position us for the weeks, months and years ahead while continuing to give you the highest-quality product you currently enjoy – and expect.
For these past 26 years – and before – The Star has been your leading source of news and information, including the past three-plus years when I’ve been at the helm of the editorial department. Whether it’s our award-winning news and sports coverage, information from and about our loyal advertisers or neat and unique special sections like having the best, oldest, most preferred, most honest and most trusted Best of the Best contest, we’re here to serve you, whether that’s on Tuesdays or Fridays or, starting next week, on Wednesdays and the weekend.
So, stay tuned and take the time to enjoy what I refer to as our “Weekender” as well as our Wednesday online edition. You will get more of the same great coverage and features as well as some extras we’re thrilled about bringing to you, including providing Saturday football coverage of Friday Night Lights.
Our latest update is the most exciting thing that’s happened to your Boerne Star since we purchased the Hill Country Reporter in 2004 and moved to a twice weekly publication two years later.
I really enjoy going through back issues of newspapers and reading about the local history they preserve. Your Star has been around since 1906, and we’re one of Kendall County’s oldest businesses.
When The Star turned 90, a special article was published on the front page of the newspaper. It began by turning back the clock.
“A new Star looms on the horizon in Boerne,” it quoted the Comfort News, adding the story appeared following the publishing of the first edition of The Boerne Star on Jan. 6, 1906.
A little research told me the history of newspapers in Boerne dates back a little further, to about 1875 when C.G Vogel published The Union Land Register. Toward the end of the 19th century, the name was changed to the Boerne Advance when Judge F.W. Schweppe acquired the paper.
Schweppe ended his newspaper career in Boerne at about the same time John Gutherie began publishing The Boerne Post in the 1890s. There appears to be no record of whether Guthrie continued Schweppe’s efforts by publishing The Post or if he started a new publication. But he continued to publish The Post until his death in 1906 when his sons sold the paper to L.N. Cook. Cook published the first Boerne newspaper carrying The Boerne Star flag on Jan. 6, 1906.
And, your local paper has been The Boerne Star ever since, and today is part of the Granite Media Partners group.
And here we are, set to turn the page as we continue to write our storied history.
It’s an honor to be a part of it as we continue to be Kendall County’s leading source of local news and information.
So, here we go … ready to write this next chapter as it unfolds right in front of us.
Please stay with us – and bring your preferred personal electronic device and reading glasses, if you need them, as well as your usual newsprint page-turning abilities.
We’re excited, and we hope you’re excited, too!
As always, thanks for reading. And next week, we’ll see you on Wednesday and the weekend!
