Each campus had increased safety measures in place, as well as their school resource officers, to ensure the first day was a safe and successful one. The first day of school went smoothly and without a hitch in the Boerne Independent School District on Wednesday as administrators and staff welcomed students at each campus.

The district had extra security measures in place to ensure a safe and secure opening day, including permanent school resource officers at each location and not allowing parents to walk their children to classrooms. Instead, they had to drop them off at the main entrance, where teachers and other staff greeted them.

A post on BISD’s Facebook page noted the successful opening day.

“The first day of school was fantastic!” it read. “The excitement and enthusiasm of the students, parents and staff were off the charts at all 12 campuses. The smiles on our students’ faces say it all. We are so happy to have them back.

“Thank you for a great first day!”

Superintendent Tom Price and Communications Director Bryan Benway spent the day visiting each campus to visit with students and staff, pose for pictures and welcome everyone to the 2022-23 academic year.

Benway told The Star the only hiccups on Wednesday were the “typical traffic jams that we see for a few weeks at the start of school, but that happens every year.”

“Our students, parents and staff did a great job with adhering to our safety protocols,” he said.

A year ago, Boerne ISD topped the 10,000 student enrollment mark for the first time and celebrated its 10,000th student later in August with a surprise visit from Price. The opening- day 2021-22 student enrollment was 9,995, and it swelled to 10,117 students by the end of the first week as more parents registered their children and they started attending classes, according to information from BISD.

This year, information provided to The Star from BISD estimated first-day enrollment at 10,528, an increase of 5.3 percent from a year ago. Wednesday’s number also is 1.2 percent higher than May’s endof- the-year enrollment of 10,401.

“As we have seen in the past few years, we fully expect student enrollment to continue to increase in the next few weeks and throughout the school year,” Benway told The Star. We have had a flurry of activity this week with parents registering their students, and that will continue.”

Champion High School’s enrollment topped 2,000 for the first time this year with an estimated 2,003 students in attendance. Boerne High School had 1,323 students on the first day while Boerne Middle School South had 892, Boerne Middle School North had 797 and Voss Middle School had 766.

At the elementary level, Van Raub led the way with 806 students while Fair Oaks Ranch housed 799 and Kendall 789. Other elementary first-day enrollments were Fabra at 689, Curington at 626, Herff at 590 and Cibolo Creek at 448.

The district noted the first-day enrollments may not be exact.

Each school had more students than the first day last year except for Boerne Middle School South.
