The 2022-23 academic year begins on Wednesday for the Boerne Independent School District, and with it comes some security and safety updates to all campuses and facilities.

District administration sent an email to all parents last week explaining the updates, and The Star was sent a copy of the information.

“Because the safety of our students, staff and guests isour most important priority at Boerne ISD, the review of district and campus safety and security protocols is an ever-evolving process,” the email read.

The email then detailed the expanded partnerships with local law enforcement to ensure each campus has a full-time School Resource Officer and mentioned the district’s safety and security committee, which helps in creating and maintaining a safe and secure school climate and culture. Committee members participate in the development and implementation of the district’s emergency response plan and affirm the school district completes safety and security audits and reports.

The information then detailed what was done over the summer.

“Boerne ISD performed an internal and external safety review of all district facilities to identify potential structural hazards or access concerns,” it read. “We have tested alarm systems, notification systems and video and surveillance systems.”

It also stated the district has started a comprehensive update of its established emergency operations plan by partnering with the Texas State School Safety Center as aresource for support and guidance. Information states the plan guides the district through critical incidents like severe weather, intruders, gas leaks and more.

“We continue to update existing protocols and training for our staff and students to know what to do in a critical incident event,” the information stated.

As far as what’s to come, BISD stated besides the already-established protocols, it will be implementing security measures to confirm all exterior doors are locked and that classroom doors are secured when students are present.

“We will enforce a single point of entry to campuses for our guests and visitors and address building and maintenance needs to secure our facilities,” the email read.

Information also stated that on Wednesday, the first day of school, parents will not be allowed to walk their children to class. The adults will be able to walk their children to the front door of the school where staff will greet and assist students.
