Reports of an active shooter at the Woodlands Apartments ended Monday afternoon when the assailant, 36-yearold Boerne resident Robert Anthony Limauro, fatally shot himself.
According to information from the city of Boerne, at 1:46 p.m. the Boerne Police Department responded to the report of shots fired at the apartments located at 150 Medical Drive. The 911 callers advised they heard five to six shots fired and saw several individuals running from the pool area. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene and gathered more information.
In all, about 20 police vehicles, including state troopers and tactical teams, along with an ambulance and fire truck, blocked the cul-de-sac leading up to the apartment complex entrance. Before Limauro was found, residents were stopped further down Medical Drive and denied entry as armed law enforcement agents – some brandishing assault rifles – guarded the exit and patrolled the complex.
Limauro fired several rounds from a handgun in Building 4 of the complex, the city’s information stated. It’s believed Limauro barricaded himself in an apartment on either the second or third floor.
After speaking with the witnesses, investigators learned Limauro had approached a neighbor upstairs from his unit and attempted to push or pull her into her own apartment at gunpoint, information stated. The woman was able to pull away from Limauro and run to safety. As she was running away, she told investigators she heard several gunshots behind her.
Members of the Boerne Emergency Response Team and the Hostage Negotiations Team responded to the scene along with a team that arrived in tactical gear. Several attempts were made at establishing phone contact with Limauro, but all were unsuccessful. Information from the BPD call sheets indicate several phone numbers were dialed and a family member was contacted, but he was unable to be reached.
In efforts to locate Limauro, law enforcement agents patrolled the area before seemingly narrowing their search to Building 4. At about 3:40 p.m., a drone was deployed in the thirdstory stairwell before a team of law enforcement agents carrying ballistic shields and wearing full tactical gear approached the third-floor apartment nearest to the complex entrance.
At about 3:45 p.m., as members of the Emergency Response Team were safely evacuating residents, Limauro was located on the third-floor breezeway unresponsive with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the city’s information stated.
Kendall County EMS and members of the Boerne Fire Department attempted lifesaving efforts, but he had already succumbed to his injury, the information stated. Limauro was pronounced deceased by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Debbie Hudson and transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Next of kin was notified by Tuesday afternoon.
The city’s investigation determined Limauro fired six rounds from a semi-automatic 9mm handgun. No other individuals were injured during the incident.
As of Wednesday, the case remains active, and the investigation is ongoing, the city stated.
