Library to host a special kind of ‘mixer’

Throughout the year, the Patrick Heath Public Library has had great fun celebrating our 70th anniversary with a variety of fun activities for people of all ages. We’ve offered food history, 1950s music trivia, an afterschool teen party, played bridge and bingo, twisted and shouted to some great live music and displayed photos of Boerne residents in the ‘50s.

We now turn to making cocktails, which was a big part of any social gathering during that time.

Some of the drinks people enjoyed aren’t as common anymore, so we want to travel back in time and learn how to recreate them. Lillian Oler of Assemble Cocktail will instruct us from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 25. This event is for adults only, so please keep the little ones at home!

If you’re interested in more information, or if you would like to register, please contact Mary at [email protected] or call the library at 830-249-3053.

Read around the clock

The library provides a fantastic array of programming for people of all ages, and the really surprising thing we discovered is that people seem to enjoy doing low-tech activities. Our bingo parties, embroidery classes, ‘50s snacking, board games and children dancing to vintage music were all big hits.

Have no fear! We know reading is important, and we continued to encourage that all summer long! We look forward to next summer, when we offer a whole new theme with exciting programs and activities. Stay tuned!

August is sleeper month

With the exception of adult book clubs and tech assistance, we are offering very limited programming during August.

This month, we take the time to gear up for all the fun programs our patrons can enjoy once school begins. Even though we won’t have storytime this month, children can still come in and step into a magical world of books, games, toys and more, so come on down!

Live! at the Library

Our popular monthly concert series is on hiatus during the month of August, but we’ll return on September 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., to enjoy the music of the Lone Star Swing Orchestra, which is a band from the Hill Country. It will take place at the amphitheater located behind the library.

We encourage you to bring your own chairs, blankets and picnics. Be prepared to enjoy a wonderful evening with friends, family and music.

Back to school It’s about that time! Children

It’s about that time! Children going to schools in Boerne ISD will be heading back on August 10.

The library staff is always excited to see everyone coming back after their summer break. While we welcome after-school students, we also encourage them to follow the library’s rules to avoid any injury or disturbance to others.

One of the most important rules to remember is that children under the age of 11 cannot be in the library without being accompanied by someone age 16 or older. If children at least 11 years old want to check out items, please help them get a library card before school starts. They are welcome to use it without an adult present.

If parents or guardians are unable to come in to help a student get a card, we do issue what we call a student-access card. This allows them to check out two physical books and download up to 16 items from our digital collection.

The library has more information posted on the website, so please visit there to find out more.

Bookshop under the windmill

Surely by now, everyone has visited our charming little bookshop at least once, but just in case, let me tell you about it! You can shop there every Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The volunteer-operated store sells quality, gently used materials such as books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and even puzzles! The proceeds from the bookshop are then used to further the library’s mission of bringing excellent resources, services and programming to our patrons.

If you would like to donate your gently-used items, the library accepts them during business hours Monday through Saturday.

Weird stuff you can check out

OK, we know many of you out there still believe that we only offer books, so we’d like to educate you on just what the library can do for you. You can also check out cake pans, musical instruments, video games, stuffed animals for children and mobile hotspots. Additionally, we offer notary service, test proctoring, Spanish-language services, curbside delivery and homebound delivery. Please take advantage of these wonderful offerings!
