John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.”
And Albert Einstein said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”
Change. Webster defines it as making someone or something different; alter or modify. …
By now, devoted Boerne Star readers know about the exciting changes we’re going to make next month. We’re moving our Friday edition to an improved weekend newspaper and moving our Tuesday product to Wednesday and making it an online-only edition.
It’s probably the biggest change for The Star since 2004 when we purchased the Hill Country Recorder.
The first Wednesday e-edition will be Aug. 17. The official date of the first “weekender” is Aug. 20-21.
It’s on purpose we’re making the switch just in time for Friday Night Lights as football fans will get a recap of our local teams and how they fared the day after the games instead of having to wait until the following Tuesday. That’s a huge plus for everyone as we rededicate ourselves to being the best source of local news and information in Kendall County.
No one else around here really covers sports anyway, and making this change will make our award-winning paper even better. Just wait and see.
And moving the Tuesday paper to Wednesday makes good sense as we continue to divide our coverage into two editions a week. Remember, the midweek product isn’t going away, it’s simply moving to online only.
We think, with all things considered, this is a good move as we continue to position ourselves to serve you as best we can.
Remember, our motto is “Local yesterday, today and tomorrow.”
We understand some may have reservations about the change, especially going online only with our midweek edition. But, if you’re a subscriber, you already receive that edition of The Star online in your email so you already have access.
If you’re not a subscriber, call us at 830-249-2441.
It’s also worth noting the high inflation we’re all experiencing has hit our pocketbooks, too. Newsprint and ink prices have increased tremendously, and our delivery driver has to fuel up twice a week and pay the same outlandish gasoline prices at the pump as you do when she drives to and from Taylor to pick up our printed papers and deliver them to the post office and to all of our vendors.
Doing business isn’t cheap these days, but being a continued dedicated partner with the community and all of you is something we take very seriously. …
You know, change happens everywhere all the time, and not just here. We’re adjusting things to better suit you and us.
I promise you everyone here at The Star remains dedicated to serve you to the best of our abilities.
I know much of our readership includes senior citizens who may not use a computer or rural subscribers with few options for internet service. But trust me, our intention is simply to maintain and improve, to keep up with the times. Like any business, we have to adapt … and change.
We will still provide the best news coverage we can. We will continue to push out the information as we get it – online and in print. Our e-edition will be just as good as the print editions we produce now. Our weekend print edition will be “beefier” for our readers as we have the obligation to give you a quality newspaper to trust and enjoy.
No one does it better in these parts, and no one ever will.
I’ve scheduled a couple of special “Coffee with Keith” meetings for us to gather and discuss the changes we’re making. You’re all invited to come and visit. The first is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at Kronkosky Place. The second one is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, also at Kronkosky Place – right before we transition.
I’ll do my best to answer your questions and talk about what to expect when we make the changes.
One thing is for certain. We won’t miss a beat – and neither will you.
During my 39-year career, I’ve gone through similar changes at newspapers where I’ve been employed. In one location, we added a Sunday paper and became a seven-day daily. That took a lot of work. In another place, we moved from an afternoon publication to a morning edition. That took a lot of work, too.
This will take a lot of work as well, but we all work extremely hard here. We’re already hard at work on this. And we won’t stop working hard.
We hope all of you – and then some – remain on board and jump on our bandwagon.
Let me close with these quotes:
“Some changes look negative on the surface, but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.” – Eckhart Tolle
“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” – Winston Churchill
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” –Socrates
“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” – John D. Rockefeller
And finally, “Change before you have to.” – Jack Welch
As always, thanks for reading, and please continue to do so on Wednesdays and the weekend.
