The Texas Department of Transportation announced earlier this week it has delayed the planned Highway 46 bridge demolition work over Interstate 10 for two weeks.
According to information from the organization, the demolition now is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, February 4-6.
TxDOT did not provide a reason for the postponement.
As part of the ongoing I-10 frontage road construction, the contractor is progressing into the next stage of construction which will require the demolition of the existing Highway 46 (Bandera Road) bridge, TxDOT stated in a press release.
“In order to safely remove the bridge, we will need an approximate 56-hour continuous full mainlane closure of the I-10 eastbound and westbound travel lanes between Highway 46 (Bandera Road) and U.S. Highway 87 (Main Street),” the information stated. “The removal of this bridge will allow crews to start working on the new westbound SH-46 bridge structure.”
The work originally was scheduled this weekend, January 21-24, but has been pushed back from 9 p.m. Friday, February 4, to 5 a.m. Monday, February 7, weather permitting.
During the demolition and cleanup, the westbound mainlanes will be reduced to one-lane, then forced to use Exit 540 (Highway 46/ Bandera Road). Westbound frontage road traffic will continue through the Highway 46 intersection, then back onto the mainlanes at the next available entrance ramp located near Fredricks Creek.
The eastbound mainlanes will be reduced to one-, then forced to use Exit 540 (Highway 46/Bandera Road). Eastbound frontage road traffic will continue through the Highway 46 intersection, then back onto the mainlanes at the next available entrance ramp located one-quarter mile west of the Highway 87 interchange.
Off-duty uniformed officers will control the traffic movement at the Highway 46 intersection, TxDOT stated.
For safety reasons, the active bridge on Highway 46 at I-10 will be closed, requiring all traffic to turn right onto the frontage roads.
Westbound Highway 46 traffic will be detoured to westbound I-10 to the Johns Road intersection and back to Exit 540 Highway 46.
Eastbound Highway 46 traffic will be detoured to the eastbound frontage road, onto the eastbound I-10 mainlanes and to Exit 543 Scenic Loop, where traffic will use the turnaround to reach the westbound frontage road into Boerne/Main Street.
