I live with an older person and am the beneficiary of hearing the same stories repeatedly. If I had a nickel for each instance I heard a story more than once, I think I’d have the national debt paid off by Christmas.
One of the stories I don’t mind hearing over and over is the one where Buddy Holly, his brother and two friends went to see “The Searchers” in 1956. In the movie, John Wayne repeatedly uses the phrase “That’ll Be the Day,” which inspired Buddy Holly to write the song of the same name.
Who doesn’t love Buddy Holly? He’s a 1950s icon much like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. And he grew up in Lubbock. Buddy Holly greatly influenced The Beatles. Without Buddy Holly we might not have The Beatles.
The library has been celebrating the 1950s all this year, and patrons still have some chances to celebrate with us. On Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m. at the library’s amphitheater, join in on the fun as The New Buddy Holly Band plays the best from the music of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and you are welcome to bring refreshments for yourself and your family. This program is family friendly and open to everyone.
On the very next night, there is another 1950s themed program at the library. There will be a drive-in style movie shown outside, the 1956 classic “Forbidden Planet.” Families are invited to join us the evening of Friday, July 22, at 8 p.m. for this fun.
Families or kids can build their own cardboard car to sit in, and we’ll kick things off with a car contest for prizes. We’ll also be giving out popcorn. For more information about this program, or the cardboard car contest, please contact Alex Peña at the library.
The drive-in movie night concludes this year’s summer programming for adults. We have really enjoyed all the programs we’ve held through the summer, which involved a wide variety, including the recording of oral histories at Rainbow Senior Center at Kronkosky Place, an online author event with Stephen Harrigan and 1950’s Jell-o creations, to name a few.
Our programming will wind down a bit in August, but that is so we can get ready for the spectacular programming we have planned for the fall, including the Boerne Book & Arts Festival on Saturday, October 1, at Main Plaza. Most of our schedule for the festival is already available at www. boernebookfest.com.
