We lost our very sweet angel, LaNell Mangold Day, at the age of 61 on June 13, 2022, after a long battle with multiple myeloma cancer. LaNell was born on September 10, 1960, in San Antonio, Texas, to Deacon Clayton A. Mangold and Macell E. Mangold. On April 26, 1986, she married Brad Day, and they had a fantastic 36 years of marriage together. They raised two amazing sons, Nathan and Brandon.
LaNell graduated Ursuline Academy High School in 1978 and received her bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from the University of Texas San Antonio in 1991.
LaNell had a passion for animals of all types — she even considered at one point becoming a veterinarian. She also loved to work with the student counseling department, especially student records and academic achievement during her 18 years with the Alamo Community Colleges District as a Senior Application Programmer/ Analyst.
She also worked part-time for St. Mark Presbyterian, Fabra Elementary Cafeteria and Victory Sports. Her personal favorite achievement was working 12 years parttime for Children’s Inn, a non-profit organization founded in Boerne, Texas, in 1991. Children’s Inn was set up as a foster home for medically fragile children. She was the office manager, bookkeeper, IT support and Apple phone, iPad and braille support. She’d even pick up the kids from school or other activities, as needed. She produced the monthly agendas for the Board of Directors. She was a Trust Protector and advocate for several of the children. She was able to work with the Children’s Inn Board to acquire a wheel chair-accessible van for one adult child and acquire two “forever homes” for two adult children as well. She also served on the Board of the Parkinson support group in Boerne.
She was involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Alamo Area youth mentoring program where she was matched with a little brother David Benavidez for 9 years. She was very involved at St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Boerne. She was a Eucharistic minister, money counter, sacristan, Life Teen Eucharistic trainer for over 7 years and participated in the Bereavement Ministry. LaNell contributed her time in various positions for Pack18 Boy Scout troop in Boerne. She loved to grow succulent plants and was very good at it. She loved going to Boerne, Medina and LBJ Lakes. She was a great slalom skier. She loved being around family and friends. She was a great cook. She also loved to travel, making it this year alone to the Holy Land for 12 days and to Galapagos Islands and Ecuador for 12 days. She also planned a weeklong vacation to Hawaii for December.
LaNell was known for her big smile, loud laughter, generosity, love of her family and friends and her infectious desire to accomplish whatever task was in front of her (Get ‘er Done was a favorite phrase of hers). She also lived by The Golden Rule: Treating others as one wants to be treated.
She loved her sons beyond measure and did everything to help them be successful in life. She was responsible for all the family finances, medical needs, social security planning, tax planning, education oversight for Nathan and Brandon and family trip planning for all our great vacations.
LaNell will forever be missed beyond any measure of words. She is in peace forever. LaNell was an incredible wife, fantastic mom, loving sister, great friend, faithful servant and a generous human being. She was helpful to everyone she met, and we thank God for her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Deacon Clayton A. Mangold and Macell E. Burkhalter Mangold; her brother, Gary Clayton Mangold; and her brother-in-law, Terry Breaux. She is survived by husband, Brad Day; sons, Nathan and Brandon Day; sisters, Judy Breaux and Donna (Bill) Russell; sister-in-law, Pam (Adam) Rincon; nieces, Denise (Russell) Gonzales and Jackie (Calhoun) Hernandez; grandniece, Madi Hernandez; nephews, John Clayton Russell and Ryan Calhoun; grandnephew Etan Hernandez, along with several nieces and nephews.
