The city of Boerne received a 2022 Award of Honor at the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers Conference in Houston in June. Of the 11 categories, Boerne was recognized for Public Service Announcement, population under 100,000 people.
The award was given in recognition of the city’s efforts to educate and inform residents of the recently created Stormwater Utility, information from the city of Boerne stated.
“By utilizing traditional communication tools and social media, and by creating a distinct video and hashtag, the endeavor led to a well-informed citizen base,” the information stated.
“After pressing pause on the initial launch of the Stormwater Utility, it was great to get the ball rolling again in late 2020 and early 2021,” Communications Director Chris Shadrock said. “By working collaboratively with the departments most involved in the process, we were able to anticipate questions from residents and make sure they had a full understanding of the new utility.”
The communications office, working with the city’s development services and customer care and utility billing office, created the material that was dispersed in the months leading up to the launch of the Stormwater Utility. The launch of the new utility also was lauded by the Texas Floodplain Management Association Region 6 for Floodplain Management Excellence in the fall of 2021, information stated. The organization sited the public outreach and extensive scope of the program.
TAMIO’s Excellence Awards recognize and encourage the achievements of Texas cities in meeting the challenge of municipal governance. TAMIO was developed as a result of the increasingly complex role of public information in municipal government. When organized in 1974, only a handful of Texas cities employed professional communications staffs. Today, TAMIO has a growing number of public information and public relation specialists serving small communities and urban centers throughout the state.
