The Cibolo is ever expanding the experiences and opportunities to connect with nature and each other. We are delighted to be bringing more programming to the Cibolo’s second campus, Herff Farm, for the creatives in our community.

The new Art in Conservation Series at Herff Farm provides an array of artistic options from watercolor to drawing, using nature as the inspiration. Currently, in June through August, you can enjoy learning new skills or build on your talents while enjoying the serenity and unique landscape of the farm.

The classes were created by local artist Jeanette Mac-Dougall, a graduate of Parsons School of Art in New York City who has been an instructor at Southwest School of Art in San Antonio for 30 years. Most recently, Jeanette co-owned Studio Comfort and worked at Intermezzo Gallery. She is accomplished in drawing and painting in various media, and her artwork is widely collected.

As a professional artist and art educator, she finds great inspiration and joy in sharing her methods and experiences with those ready to tap into their own dreams of self-expression through art. Jeannette will bring in guest artists and instructors, such as newcomer Rebecca Burritt, who will be teaching alongside and collaborating with her on the classes.

The beauty of the natural world is an especially rewarding subject to capture. With all its complex forms, textures, colors and systems, environmental art studies challenge both beginner and experienced artists. Through classically infused practice these art classes will help students achieve a higher standard of work. Every class will introduce students to fundamental principles of art as a mark-making code used to formalize, exaggerate, and design artwork, as well as identify the visual language that lies beneath artistic design.

Students will have weekly opportunities to directly observe from nature, proceed through exercises to improve their technical skills and build on a variety of techniques that offer endless opportunities for progress. Exercises include examining master artworks, learning how to measure, mixing color with knowledge of color theory, developing art vocabulary and simplifying complex forms.

With new eyes for seeing the natural world students will discover how to create aesthetically pleasing designs. If you would like to improve your drawing or painting skills while appreciating the natural beauty of the world around us, please join us each week on Wednes days and Saturdays.

On Wednesdays, folks can attend Drawing from Nature weekly from 10 a.m. to noon. It is a class for all levels and is held inside or on the porch of the historic Herff homestead. On Saturdays during the Farmers Market, you can attend a watercolor class from 10 a.m. to noon also in or around the Herff homestead.

The cost is $50 per class and is limited to 10 people per class. They are best suited for ages 18 and up. Materials will be provided for the first class only, then you will receive a list of items to purchase for subsequent classes.

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for our Mark & Print Making Workshop on Thursday, June 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Herff Farm. This is a workshop for children and adults with classes tailored to each group and happening simultaneously in separate locations. You will not want to miss this great new opportunity to celebrate and capture the cultural heritage of our community.
