The International Center for Leadership in Education, with a mission to encourage, inspire and support today’s educators, has named the Boerne Independent School District a 2022 Innovative District for its systemwide focus on instruction and organization structures to increase student growth.
Boerne ISD team leaders have worked relentlessly to develop a vision focused on the needs of their students and community, information from the school district stated.
“Boerne ISD being named a nationwide innovative district is another reason why we are consistently mentioned as one of the top school districts not only in Texas but in the U.S.,” BISD Director of Communications Bryan Benway told The Star. “Our district, led by the Teaching and Learning Department and our campus administrators, have done a wonderful job with implementing administrative walkthroughs as well as reviewing district and campus data as it relates to student grades, testing and success. These are key factors that lay the groundwork for district innovation.”
Administrative walkthroughs are when campus leaders such as principals, department chairs and instructional coaches observe teachers in the classroom, with the goal to help them with innovative ideas to enhance classroom instruction, Benway said.
“The way students learn today is different than it was 10, 20, or even two years ago,” he said. “Innovation is the key to continued student success.”
Boerne ISD is one of only eight innovative districts across the United States that will share its best practices during ICLE’s 30th annual Model Schools Conference. The event provides a professional learning forum for thousands of passionate educators and leaders to network together and support one another, information stated. BISD’s presentation titled “Put me in Coach! Meeting the Needs of all Learners Through Transformational Coaching” will be led by Chief Instructional Officer Larissa Flores along with Early Childhood Education Director Renee Munn and Secondary English Language Arts Coordinator Jayne Burton and principals Jamie Robinson (Boerne Middle School South) and Krista Pomeroy (Cibolo Creek Elementary).
“To be one of just eight school districts in the country presenting at this conference says a lot about how Boerne ISD continues to be an innovative leader in education,” Benway said.
The Boerne team will be sharing details on how the implementation of an instructional coaching program has resulted in professional reflection and steady growth for teachers and students, BISD’s information stated, adding higher levels of student engagement, rigor and relevance are evident.
“Innovative districts are strategic about decision making and are purpose driven” said Linda Lucey, program chair and ICLE associate partner. “Each of the 2022 innovative districts have leadership teams continuously focused on developing cultures of success.”
Selected annually based on rigorous criteria, innovative districts have evidence of growth year over year, aligned vision and structures and are intentional about instructional decisions.
“Moving a system forward for progress in challenging cir cumstances is hard, exhausting work,” Lucey said. “The hard work has paid off with this group of inspiring leaders. We are proud to have the opportunity to learn from them and celebrate their success with them.”
The International Center for Leadership in Education is a division of learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
“Professional learning is a key component to the continued success of teachers and students, as well as the addition of instructional coaches who are made up of former teachers who excelled in the classroom and then transitioned to campus leadership teams,” Benway said. “Teachers are able to participate in professional learning days with their peers as well as colleagues from outside our district, with the goal of improving and adjusting in order to better serve our students.
“I have observed a few of the professional learning days inside our classrooms. It truly is a great learning experience for teachers and staff.
