Summer reading is more than just fun

The benefits of summer reading programs have been well documented for decades.

The benefits of summer reading programs have been well documented for decades.

As noted in School Library Journal, back in 1978 Barbara Heyns, a New York University sociology professor, tracked the academic success of sixth- and seventh-grade students in Atlanta, Georgia, for two years. She discovered that children who read at least six books during the summer either maintained or improved their reading skills. Interestingly, she also found that the number of books read, minutes read or even time spent in the library all helped to boost students’ academic levels.

Subsequent studies over the decades have confirmed Heyns’ findings. School Library Journal conducted its own research in 2006 and discovered yet another benefit of summer reading programs. Students who participated in such programs entered school the following academic year with more positive attitudes toward reading and greater confidence in their academic skills.
