Our summer theme this year mirrors the library’s annual theme of celebrating 70 years of serving the community. We are focusing on the 1950s with our “Read Around the Clock” programming.
The library offers programming for all ages. It takes place from June 6 to July 25 so you have plenty of opportunity to participate.
You can find our detailed brochure either online at boernelibrary.org, or you can pick up a copy at the library.
Children and families
Each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., babies up to age 2 can delight in a free-play session hosted by Miss Megan, and on the same day at 10:30 a.m., children ages 2 to 5 are invited to our storytimes featuring tales, tunes, movement, puppetry and crafting with Miss Constance.
On Thursday at 9:30 a.m., Miss Libby will delight the babies ages 0 to 2 with stories, songs, movement and bubbles.
In addition to these regular weekly storytimes with Miss Megan, Miss Constance and Miss Libby, youngsters can enjoy a variety of special programs. Each Tuesday at 10 a.m. tweens in grades 4 and 5 are invited to play Bingo for prizes, and refreshments will be served. Each Thursday at 10 a.m., the team from Heather Stolle’s School of Dance will lead you in dances from the ‘50s. Each Friday at 10 a.m., our own Miss Alison will give lessons on simple embroidery. On Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., learn how to concoct special treats from the ‘50s. Class is limited to 30 participants, and it’s first-come, first-served.
Adult Bingo party
Every age group gets to play Bingo, but the adults will have their own special evening on Friday, June 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to the game, we’ll be offering delicious refreshments and plenty of prizes! The party takes place in the first-floor community room, and no registration is required.
Coffeehouse conversations
Over the next two months we will enjoy special programs for adults in different locations.
On Tuesday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m., in a special Zoom program, author Stephen Harrigan will chat about his new book, “Leopard on the Loose!” Contact Caren Creech for the link.
On Tuesday, June 14 and July 28, at 10 a.m. at the Rainbow Senior Center, you get the chance to reminisce about what the 1950s meant to you. The library will collect your stories as part of our oral history project.
On Tuesday, June 21, at 10 a.m., join us at the library for coffee, pastries and lively conversation. It’s always great fun to look back fondly at what we think of as simpler times.
One topic that you can share is about your library experiences. Did you ever use one of the other library locations here in Boerne? Let us know. We’d love to hear your stories.
Retro book discussions
Several of our regular discussion groups will be tackling the ‘50s this summer. On Monday, June 13, at noon, our Food for Thought group will be discussing the stories of Flannery O’Connor from her book “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” and on Monday, June 27, at noon, our Reality Readers group will enjoy talking about “Something from the Oven: Reinventing Dinner in the 1950s America” by Laura Shapiro. These and all our discussion groups are free and open to adults.
Programming for teens
Many of our events are great for teens and families in general.
Each Monday, Alex will post coordinates on Facebook for a painted 50s-themed rock around town. Find it, snap it and post it to the Boerne Rocks Facebook page.
Starting June 15, each Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. will be devoted to gaming 50s style! We will rotate among popular 1950s games including Hula Hoop, marbles, hopscotch and everyone’s favorite, the Limbo!
Starting June 16, each Thursday evening the library will stay open late so teens and their friends and families can enjoy board games in the first-floor community room. The space will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Please bring your own food and drinks and pull up a chair.
On Monday, June 20, at 1 p.m., beat the heat in The Hub. Just stop by for ice cream and a movie in the gaming room.
On Saturday, June 25, at 7 p.m., teens get to take over the library to help us solve a mystery! Online registration is required for this role-playing game. Participants must be 11 years or older.
Live! at the Library
On Thursday, June 16, from 7 to 9 p.m., Jay Boy Adams and his band will entertain the crowd under the beautiful night sky at the amphitheater located behind the library. Adams’s music is a mix of country, rock and blues, but he enjoys singing songs that tell stories.
According to his website, he has toured with ZZ Top, Stephen Stills, The Marshall Tucker Band, Joe Cocker and others. Please bring a blanket or chair, and you’re always welcome to bring a picnic dinner.
