Boys and girls have been enjoying doll tea parties for generations.
The first recorded accounts of toy tea sets dates back to the 16th century. The sets were made of pewter and copper and were crafted in Germany, a nation famed for its wooden and metal toys. Tea parties appealed to
Tea parties appealed to youngsters’ delight in the imaginative world of pretend. Such parties also enabled children to practice skills in etiquette. Moreover, as child psychologist Jean Piaget noted in 1962, play is an integral part of a child’s cognitive development and intelligence.
Many a Hill Country child adores his or her plush pal or doll, and such companions often accompany boys and girls to the library. Our youth department will celebrate the world of dolls this month with a very special tea party.
American Girl Tea Party
Bring your favorite doll or plush pal to our party that features fun activities, crafting and refreshments. You might win one of three mini American girl dolls or a full-sized doll. It’s scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 28.
Summer Discovery 2022: Read Around the Clock
Put your glad rags on and have some fun! We’re going back to the 1950s with everyone. Come on and read around the clock and more – we’ll have Nifty Fifties programs galore.
Stop by the youth department to pick up your book bag with your log and calendar plus a free book and giveaways!
Read Around the Jukebox
Color each of the days on the records surrounding the jukebox as you read at least 20 minutes a day. Turn over the log to see fun summer events and programs in June and July. Turn in your log before 5 p.m. on Friday, July 22. You will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

NASA was established in 1958, kicking off the age of space exploration. You will howl with delight as Mr. Pitts blasts off with outer space puppetry featuring the very goofy hound Frank. Magic and ventriloquism, too.
• July 18, Community Room, Author visit: Alda Dobbs.
Meet Alda Dobbs, author of the Bluebonnet Award Nominee book “Barefoot Dreams of Petra Lu.” Miss Alda will share vintage photographs, maps, clippings, etc. to describe how the book was based upon the experiences endured by her great-grandmother during the Mexican Revolution.

Luau party fever swept the nation during the 1950s. Hula back in time with us and enjoy a Hawaiian performance by Hula Halau Kaeepa under the direction of Keito St. James.
Art-to-Go Bags, grades K-5
Pick up a fun craft that you can do at home each week. Supplies are limited. First come, first served. Weekly from June 6 to July 22.
Tween Time Travel
Tuesdays
Bingo Blast, Youth Activity Room. Bingo was a big craze in the 1950s. We challenge tweens in grades 4-5 to play for prizes every week. Refreshments for all. Weekly from June 7 to July 19, 10a.m.

• Sensory Studio: Every Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. Babies age 0 to 2 years will delight in this free play session.
• Little Listeners: Every Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. Young children ages 2 to 5 are invited to our storytime featuring tales, tunes, movement, puppetry and crafting.
• Book Babies: Every Thursday, 9:30 a.m. Babies age 0 to 2 years are welcome to enjoy a special storytime with stories, songs, movement and bubbles.
Rock Around the Clock
Fifties Dancing, Youth Activity Room. The team from Heather Stolle’s School of Dance will lead you in a weekly Sock Hop to the toe-tapping tunes of the 1950s. Every Thursday, 10:00 a.m., June 9 to July 21.
Stitch in Time
Youth Activity Room. Embroidery is for everyone! Marvelous Miss Alison shows you how it’s done. We’ve got all the supplies you need. Need inspiration for what to stitch? We will take you back in time each week with a timely tidbit from the past. Go back in time or forward into the future – the choice is yours. Let your needle lead the way! Every Friday, 10 a.m., June 10 through July 22.
Nifty Fifties Noshing
Youth Activity Room. Concoct some scrumptious signature treats from the 50’s each week. Class size limited to 30 children per week. First come, first served. Every Saturday, 10:30 a.m., June 11, 18, 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23.

Radio Storytime
Tune in to Boerne Radio (KBRN FM 103.9) for a weekly Saturday storytime at a new early bird time of 7:45 a.m. Enjoy a dramatic reading of a quality story suitable for the whole family.
