After graduating all but three starters from last fall’s football team, Champion coach Keith Kaiser has a lot of questions going into next year, but the coach said he may have found some answers during Wednesday’s Navy-White spring game.
The Champion offense challenged the defense on Wednesday at Charger Field before a packed stadium.
“That’s one of the great things about spring football, we get a lot of questions answered. Not everything but at least we’re not waiting until the fall to figure it out. There was a lot of good things that happened out there today,” he said. “When you lose 19 starters from a good football team, you have a lot of holes to fill.”
The offense won Wednesday’s game, 96-67.
Points are earned on offense by accumulating first downs, field goals and touchdowns, while the defense picks up points by stopping drives, recording sacks and getting turnovers.
Kaiser and his staff have tinkered with the scoring system in the past and Kaiser added that he might do it again for future games.
“Nothing is ever designed for the defense to have success,” he said. “That’s just the way it is, but I didn’t look at the scoreboard and pay attention to it.”
This is the eighth spring game under Kaiser, with the 2020 contest cancelled because of COVID. The offense has won six of them, including the last five.
Kaiser said having the spring game has always helped his program and added that it was a good day for the entire program on Wednesday.
“Overall, I’m extremely excited,” he said. “The coaches all reiterated that they were happy with how it all went and now we have to have a great summer.”
