AUSTIN – Boerne High had a great day at the 4A state track and field meet last Thursday in Austin and earned three medals – two silver and a bronze – at Mike Myers Stadium on the UT campus.
Junior Tori Adams and senior Ashley Clingman finished second and third in the shot put, while sophomore Kendall Lemm picked up silver in the high jump on the other end of the stadium Thursday morning.
Boerne’s three medals earned them 22 points and helped them tie for eighth in the state with Fredericksburg in the team standings.
Lemm picked up 8 points in the high jump and came close to winning the whole thing. She was tied for first with Caroline Peterson of Pieper after both cleared 5-5 to force a jump off for first.
Peterson cleared 5-6 on her first try to take the lead and then Lemm tried to clear 5-6 but hit the bar to earn silver. Lemm said she would have loved to win gold but was proud of her silver medal.
“I was hoping to get to 5-6 and first would have been nice, but anything from there would be honoring,” she said. “It means everything in the world, the experience was amazing just to be here.”
Clingman missed the last two track seasons, two years ago because of COVID and last year she was out with an ankle injury.
“Coming back after two years without throwing, I honestly did it because I could be with my friends, it’s been a blessing to make it this far and compete against Tori. We have a blast together,” she said. “My goal was to do my best, if that meant not getting on the podium then that’s what would have happened but it so happened that I threw far enough to get on the podium.”
Clingman’s best throw was 42-3.5 on her last toss to earn 6 points and a bronze medal.
Adams threw 44-2 on her fifth attempt of the morning to stand in second. Adams was trying to catch Carlie Weiser of Gidding, but Weiser won it with a throw of 46-1, however Adams earned silver and 8 team points.
“I’m excited, I was hoping to beat (Weiser), but she’s very good and very talented,” Adams said. “I just wanted to medal, that was my goal. I plan to come back hopefully and to medal again.”
Adams also competed in the discus on Thursday afternoon where she finished seventh with her best throw of 96-1, which came on her first attempt.
Later in the day, freshman Mary Marino raced in the 1600 where she placed eighth with a time of 5:22.21.
