Boerne High has advanced to the third round of the 4A baseball playoffs after the Greyhounds beat Sweeny in a one gamer last Friday in Hallettsville.
BHS bit the Bulldogs, 2-0, and improved to 30-3 overall. Boerne faces Rockport-Fulton in a best-of-three series this weekend.
All three games, if needed, will take place in Jourdanton and are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
Boerne pitcher Andrew Poole had another outstanding performance on the mound on Friday. After only giving up 2 hits against Gonzales in the previous round, Poole was even better vs. Sweeny and only yielded 1 hit. He didn’t surrender a run in either contest.
Poole went 6.1 innings on Friday, fanned 5 and walked 1 on 98 pitches. Kalob Sanchez entered with one out in the seventh and closed it out by striking out 2 batters to earn the save.
Friday’s contest was 0-0 until the Greyhounds broke the ice with a single run in the fifth.
Hutson Hendrix started things off with a double and then walks to Connor Shill and Rashawn Galloway loaded the bases. A third walk in the inning, this one to Cam Johnson, pushed in Hendrix’s courtesy runner Jaxon Baize to make it 1-0 with one out, but the Bulldogs got out of the inning by striking out the next two batters and Boerne left the bases loaded, something they did in the third as well. In all, Boerne stranded 10 runners on base as that one hit to break it open eluded them.
In the sixth, Tyler Garritano doubled and scored on a Hendrix single and it was 2-0 in favor of the Hounds with one out, which is where it stayed.
It was Garritano’s second double of the game, while Hendrix doubled and singled and Sanchez hit a single to account for Boerne’s five hits in the game.
Garritano and Baize both scored single runs and Hendrix and Johnson picked up one RBI each.
