West Columbia pulled off the upset last weekend after the Lady Necks softball team knocked Boerne High from the playoffs in the third round in a best-of-three series held in La Grange.

Boerne took the first game on Friday, 7-3, but West Columbia rallied to win the next two on Saturday to take the series.

The Lady Necks claimed the second game, 6-4, and then won the third game later that day, 5-1, to end Boerne’s season at 29-7.

Ava Rodriguez was Friday’s Game 1 winner from the circle, while Reese Wilson and Taryn Madlock both hit home runs in the contest.

Saturday’s Game 2 was an elimination game for the Lady Necks and they were able to win the contest to tie up the series at 1-1.

It was tied at one point, 4-4, but West Columbia scored the final two runs to take the lead and hold on for the win.

The Lady Necks used four different pitchers in the series and it seemed effective in keeping the Boerne batters off balance to a degree, especially in the third game.

In the winner-take-all Game 3, Ally Phillips started for West Columbia, was replaced by Braylynn Henderson in the fourth, Madison Hornback entered in the seventh and then Kimber Moraw closed it out.

The four Lady Neck pitchers held Boerne to three base knocks in the third game and the Lady Hounds were hitless through the first five innings. BHS did load the bases in the fourth with an error and two walks and just one out but the next two batters were retired.

Henderson had the big stick for the Lady Necks on Saturday and hit two homers, a solo shot in the third and a 2-run dinger in the fourth. West Columbia scored 2 runs in the third and added 3 more in the fourth for the 5-0 lead.

BHS didn’t score its lone run until the sixth when Heidi Maytum reached and her courtesy runner Morgan Duty moved to second on a Cameron Cooper sacrifice. Reese Wilson singled and brought in Duty and it was 5-1. Madi Dorrow came up and singled and moved Wilson to second but there were two outs and the next BHS batter flew out to centerfield to end the threat.

In the seventh, Boerne put its first two runners on against Hornback with a walk to Ava Nieto and a single by Taylor Wilson but Moraw entered for Hornback and got out of the jam without giving up a run to end the game and the Boerne season.
