First place was on the line in District 26-5A Tuesday night when the Champion girls basketball team visited New Braunfels Canyon.

It was a battle that featured 14 ties or lead changes and went to overtime before it was decided. The game came down to the very last shot before Canyon prevailed by two points, 57-55.

Canyon maintains its grip on first place and remains undefeated at 9-0 in district, while the Lady Chargers slip to 7-2 with both 26-5A losses coming to the Cougars.

Champion is 20-6 overall. They are off Friday and resume district play Tuesday when they host Dripping Springs.

Canyon was off to a fast start and leading 13-8 after the first quarter. The Lady Chargers outscored NBC in the second by a point, 16-15, and was trailing going to halftime, 28-24.

Champion had its best offensive quarter of the night in the third when they tallied 17 points, while Canyon scored 12 to give the Chargers a 41-40 edge as the game went to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Canyon was up 47-45 but Khiara Flugence tied it at 47-47 on a two-point bucket and sent it to overtime.

Both teams had a hard time scoring once it went to OT, but Canyon was the first on the board two minutes in for the 49-47 edge.

After a Champion miss, NBC converted a 3-point play with a bucket and a free throw for the 52-47 advantage with 1:54 left.

The Chargers missed again and the Cougars went down to the other end and were fouled, converting one of two free throws to open up a sixpoint lead at 53-47 with 1:26 remaining.

That’s when Madyson Marquard hit a 3-pointer and sliced the lead in half at 53-50. On its next trip down the court, the Cougars were fouled again, and again, made 1 of 2 free throws for the 54-50 lead.

With 20.9 seconds remaining, Khiara Flugence hit a 2-pointer and the Canyon advantage was down to two points at 54-52.

After the Flugence bucket, there was a timeout and when played resumed, the Chargers fouled to stop the clock. Canyon went to the line with 13.8 seconds and made both free throws and the lead was at four, 56-52.

Champion went down the floor and Marquard nailed another 3 and it was a onepoint game at 56-55. The Chargers had to foul again and did with 4.8 ticks.

Canyon made one of two free throws and it was 57-55 but the Chargers didn’t have much time to work with. After the second free throw, the Chargers moved the ball down the court and got a look at a 3-pointer but it didn’t fall in and the Cougars prevailed by two points.

Flugence had a big night and tallied 24 points on 10 of 16 shooting and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Flugence outscored Canyon’s Emery Black who finished with 23 points.

Marquard netted 14 points and Kristen Borgerding added 11 points as three Chargers were in double digits.

Kendall Skipper added 4 points and had 5 assists, while Adriana Barreiro scored 2 points.
