Texas and Kendall County voters overwhelmingly approved the two constitutional amendments that appeared on the May 7 ballot. In both cases, a majority vote was needed for passage.
Proposition 1, authorizing the state legislature to reduce the property tax limit for school maintenance and operations taxes imposed on the homesteads of elderly or disabled residents to reflect any tax rate reduction enacted by law from the preceding tax year, passed statewide with 86.9 percent of the vote.
Proposition 2, raising Texas’ homestead exemption from $25,000 to $40,000 for school district property taxes, was approved with 84.8 percent of the vote.
Residents in Kendall, Bexar and Comal counties who participated in the election supported the first proposition with 85.2 percent “for” votes. Similarly, Proposition 2 was supported locally with 89.1 percent casting “for” votes.
The language for Proposition 1 read as follows:
“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for the reduction of the amount of a limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for general elementary and secondary public school purposes on the residence homestead of a person who is elderly or disabled to reflect any statutory reduction from the preceding tax year in the maximum compressed rate of the maintenance and operations taxes imposed for those purposes on the homestead.”
The language for Proposition 2 read as follows:
“The constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000.”
Published information stated this proposition would save the average homeowner about $176 on their annual property tax bill.
