Boerne Independent School District patrons put their trust in Place 4 Trustee Maritza Gonzalez-Cooper for another three years as she easily was re-elected to another term on Saturday.
Gonzalez-Cooper, who has served three terms on the school board and has served as board president as well as on several of the board’s committees, was re-elected by nearly a 2-to-1 count as she garnered 63.7 percent of the vote from residents in Kendall, Bexar and Comal counties who reside within the school district.
Her opponent was Armando Trevino. The vote tally was 3,145-1,791. Turnout was 12.86 percent and consisted of 6,504 total votes cast.
“Obviously, I’m ecstatic about serving another term,” Gonzalez-Cooper told The Star after the unofficial results were posted by the Kendall County Elections Office. “I appreciate the faith and support people continue to have in me, and I’m excited about our future.”
In Place 5, Garrett Wilson, who was appointed by the other board members to fill that spot last year, was unchallenged and will be reseated for a full three-year term.
Gonzalez-Cooper, 53, is a USAA adjuster and married to San Antonio firefighter Rob Gonzalez-Cooper.
“It has been my honor to serve as a trustee on the Boerne ISD board,” Gonzalez-Cooper said before the election. “I love this community and am passionate about providing excellent opportunities for all our students.”
She said she has a strong knowledge of the district, the community and its values, adding BISD is never complacent and it operates with a spirit of seeking continuous improvement.
“I have a proven commitment to the students, parents, staff and taxpayers of this great community,” Gonzalez-Cooper said.
As far as the majority of voters supporting the district’s two bond propositions through Saturday’s election, Gonzalez-Cooper said she also appreciates the trust voters have in the entire board of trustees and the district in general as well.
“What’s important is we promise to be fiscally responsible and be good stewards of that money,” she said. “I appreciate the trust voters have in us as we prepare for the growth we know is coming.”
By slim margins, BISD voters on Saturday approved two bond proposals totaling $165.64 million that target growth, safety concerns and the needs of the district, including expansion, maintenance, safety projects and technology upgrades. (See separate story.)
“As a district and board, we want to embrace the growth,” Gonzalez-Cooper said. “We certainly don’t want to fight it, but be prepared for it. The worst thing we can do is be unprepared. We will keep doing the good things we are doing.”
Gonzalez-Cooper and Wilson will be sworn in during the BISD trustees meeting on Monday, May 16.
