The Boerne baseball team ended a five-year drought as district champs on Friday when the Greyhounds defeated Wimberley, 10-0, in six innings.
It’s Boerne coach Bill Merrell’s ninth league title since he took the job in 2009- 10 when the school reopened after a one-year shutdown to remodel.
The Hounds had won eight district titles in a row with the last coming in 2017 before Friday.
Merrell said the team has done a great job, especially overcoming key injuries this year. “I’m proud of the kids, they played so hard,” he said. “We overcame some losses, it’s hard to lose what we’ve lost, but they stepped up.”
BHS is 27-3 overall and went 9-1 in district. They open the playoffs this week vs. Gonzales (See schedule).
The Hounds took the lead early with 3 runs in the first and another in the second for the 4-0 lead. It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when the Hounds heated up for 6 runs.
Rashawn Galloway ended the game with a bases-loaded double to bring in a couple of runs and kick in the mercy rule.
Galloway finished with 4 hits and 2 RBI, Cam Johnson hit 2 singles, scored twice and drove in a run in the second, Andrew Poole hit a double and 2 singles, Xander Cloudy drove in 2 runs and Jaxon Baize scored twice, while Tyler Garritano and Dylan Perez both walked twice and scored a run, and Hutson Hendrix took 3 walks and scored once.
