District title within reach for Boerne baseball team

It’s pretty simple for the Boerne High baseball team – win Friday’s home game against Wimberley and the Greyhounds will claim this year’s District 28-4A championship.

It’s pretty simple for the Boerne High baseball team – win Friday’s home game against Wimberley and the Greyhounds will claim this year’s District 28-4A championship.

Boerne has the league title within reach after the Hounds defeated Wimberley on Tuesday at their place, 10-5.

BHS improves to 26-3 overall and 8-1 in district. They host the Texans at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Boerne bookended the game with a 4-run first and a 4-run seventh. In between they scored single runs in the fourth and sixth frames to get its 10 runs.

Boerne High scored its 4 runs in the first thanks to three walks, a Cam Johnson double, a Dylan Perez single and a Texans error to take the 4-0 lead.

The Texans got on the board in the second with a single run despite a double play from the BHS defense in the inning.

In the fourth, Hutson Hendrix and Connor Shill both reached base. The next batter hit into a double play but Hendrix managed to score and Boerne was up, 5-1.

Wimberley had a good inning in the fifth and scratched for a couple of runs to trim the lead to 5-3, but the Hounds got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth after Kalob Sanchez singled to score courtesy runner Jaxon Baize from third.

The Greyhounds blew it open in the seventh with 4 runs. Three singles and a double from Andrew Poole helped Boerne push in its 4 runs for the 10-3 lead.

Wimberley tried to rally in the seventh and scored two runs with only one out but Sanchez struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Both teams finished with 10 hits in the game. Kalob Sanchez hit 2 singles, scored a run and picked up an RBI; Cam Johnson doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in a run; Andrew Poole doubled, walked, pushed in a run and scored twice; Tyler Garritano walked twice and scored a run; Dylan Perez hit 2 singles and drove in 2 runs and scored once, Xander Cloudy singled and pushed in a run, Hutson Hendrix walked and scored; Connor Shill hit 2 singles, while Jaxon Baize and Brooks Perez both scored once.

Cloudy picked up the win on 73 pitches and went 5 innings. He gave up 7 hits, 3 runs, fanned 1 and walked 1.

Sanchez threw the final 2 innings and yielded 3 hits, 2 earned runs, sat down 5 and walked 2 and earned the save.
