Last week, a federal judge halted that stupid airline mask policy. She finally ended the charade. But, wait. Within two days, a federal bureaucracy decided to appeal her ruling.
Wow. Is anybody in Washington looking out for the us? Is anybody on our side?
To be sure, it is still everyone’s right to wear a mask onboard an airliner. Always has been. I know a professional singer who has worn a facemask on airliners for 20 years. I really don’t care what he does, but I don’t want the government telling me what I must do.
Our next chance to make changes in Washington will come in November, and it can’t come soon enough. In the meantime, we have important state and local decisions to be made next month. Let’s take a closer look.
We have two elections in May this year. For detailed information, look at the Kendall County website under the Elections Department.
The first is called a Joint Election. Early voting is now open, and the last day of early voting is Tuesday, May 3. Election Day is Saturday, May 7.
In the Joint Election, there are two state of Texas Propositions. Also, there is a Boerne ISD school board trustee race and a Boerne ISD bond election.
The state propositions both involve constitutional amendments for property tax reductions. Our Republican legislature in Austin has passed these measures.
In ballot order, the next race is for Boerne ISD board of trustee in Place 4.
We are very proud of our Boerne schools. They are the best in our region. And credit goes to the leadership. They made the tough decisions during the pandemic, and results have showed their wisdom. Kudos to the leadership for putting the children’s needs first.
There are also two ballot measures for Boerne ISD bond proposals. We all know our student population continues to grow. In fact, we have 700 more students now as compared to the same date one year ago! I served on the Long Range Steering Committee for these bonds, and I can attest that detailed homework was done and difficult decisions made.
With approval of the two state amendments, school property taxes will actually decline for some homeowners, including all over age 65 who have frozen their taxes. And the tax rate will not rise.
The second May election is the Republican Primary runoff. This is where the GOP chooses our final nominees to run in November. In two of these March primary races, no candidate reached 50 percent, which is typical of crowded primary races. Now, the top two vote-getters from the March primary are in the runoff.
Early voting will begin on Monday, May 16, and conclude on Friday, May 20. Election Day is Tuesday, May 24.
State offices on this ballot are attorney general, commissioner of the General Land Office, railroad commissioner and state representative. We are fortunate that many of these candidates have come to see us in Kendall County.
County offices on this ballot are county judge and county commissioner in Precinct 2. We have held many events during the campaign season to help voters make their decisions.
Now it is up to us, the Republican voters, to decide who will serve in these important posts.
As an elected party official, I am unable to endorse any candidates in a Republican primary. But I urge every Republican voter to look online, attend events, talk to your friends and neighbors and cast an informed vote.
So, there are two important elections in May. Be sure to vote in both.
Exercise your right to vote, make your voice heard and have the final word on these important decisions. I will!
–Scott S. Kramer is Chairman of the Republican Party of Kendall County.
