The Old Jail Museum, 208 E. San Antonio Ave. in Boerne, will host its second annual Rock the Jail history day on Saturday, May 7, with a community celebration from 2 to 9 p.m.

Returning is singer Michael McMullen. Local musicians, storytelling, Old West re-enactors, Old Jail and American Scroll merchandise, jail tours and much more are planned throughout the afternoon and evening.

Additionally, two local breweries – Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. and Free Roam Brewing Co. – are scheduled to be on site for some brew tasting.

“One of our original goals was to support students who have an interest in history, archeology, law enforcement or museum related professions,” said Dean Sprowl, president of Friends of the Kendall County Historic Jail. “Proceeds from this community heritage event will assist with funding $250 scholarships for each of the three high schools in Kendall County.

“What has been tremendously gratifying this first year has been the overwhelming positive comments and appreciation for the jail restoration, the attention to detail and the quality of the exhibits, and we are happy to be in a position to give back to the community.”

Kendall County’s Old Jail was constructed in 1887 and served as the third Kendall County Jail for 99 years. It has been restored to house the museum. Visitors can explore several exhibits, including The Texas Rangers Battle of Walker’s Creek, a Hill Country moonshine still, Big Bill Lister “Radio’s Tallest Singing Cowboy,” local Winchester sharpshooters Adolph & Plinky Toepperwein, the history of local law enforcement and the Newton Boys. Visitors can even be “locked” inside one of four original jail cells. Guest exhibits rotate regularly.

The museum is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fee is $5, with free admission for law enforcement officers and children 10 and under.
